A little AU snippet set basically right after Infinity War in which Vision is rebuilt (like we all wanted THANKS MARVEL >:[ oh well). enjoy!
There's not much Vision remembers from before. Being pulled apart and put back together again will do that to a person.
But he does remember some things, snippets of memories faint as a ghost lingering between rebuilt neurons.
He remembers Tony and Steve, Peter and Nat. He remembers the old Avengers tower and the spacious facility. There are battles he remembers, too - fighting in Sokovia, flying over the clash at Leipzig. He remembers the bitter taste of coffee, the warmth of cotton clothes, and the
He remembers all these things. And he remembers her.
At least, he tries to.
This woman, this apparition, has haunted him since he was reborn. There is so much about her that lingers in his mind; the curve of her jaw and the green of her eyes. He remembers a cascade of red hair and the intoxicating smell of lilac perfume. The seam of her lips, petal-pink and soft. The gentle arc of her smile, warm and inviting. He remembers those lips parted on a sigh, hearing his name fall from them - Vizh. He remembers a kiss, stolen beneath a streetlight in Scotland, the sense of urgency behind it and the taste of lip balm lingering on his tongue for hours after.
When he sleeps, on those few and far between nights, his dreams are filled with visions of scarlet. Ethereal tendrils of ruby red wrapped around slender fingers and the glow of eyes behind dark waves. Sometimes those eyes are filled with tears, that power pointed at him. Other times, he dreams of her cradled in his arms as a city collapses down, the wind in their eyes and the world falling away.
Yet for all that he does remember, there is always one thing that escapes him: her name. He wants to remember it, so badly, but each time he thinks he has a grasp on it, it slips away like dust between his fingers, this ghostly woman disappearing from him again.
For weeks he wonders, struggling to remember every detail he can, until finally he cannot simply sit and wonder anymore. He asks about her, one day, when he is training with Natasha. She seems surprised that he doesn't remember, but happily divulges the information he wants. She tells him about this woman. Says her name was Wanda, and that she loved him. That she was fierce and strong and kind. Natasha tells him she was from Sokovia, about her powers and how she joined the Avengers. He remembers pieces of these things, flashes of memories sparking behind his eyes.
But most of all, she says, Wanda loved him.
He thinks then that maybe he doesn't need to remember every detail. That maybe this one is enough, for now. All else in the world has gone to hell, hope draining quickly from hearts. But this, for him, is enough to keep him hanging on. Because if there really is a way to undo what Thanos has wrought, then he needs to believe that one day, that love can be his again.
