We met one man and a boy who was fishing. They were sitting in the shade and trying to catch some little fish. The man had on a beige cloth hat with a large pink flower on it. Very Vietnamese! He said he was a teacher enjoying the last of the school holidays. I said fishing was probably an easier job.

Early morning in Hoi An

I got up about six in the morning and went walking along the river path. The memory card filled up. No spare with me, of course. And no long lens. Bloody stupid. Try again tomorrow.

Breakfast. Four kinds of steamed rice cakes including bánh bèo chén and bánh ít, also included was one thin sheet of rice cake steamed in banana leaf with prawn powder for flavour. Dragon fruit smoothie, Vietnamese coffee. After that, I worked with con Lily revising her anatomy vocabulary.

Early Morning Walk along the River

I went for a walk down to the Thu Bon river in Hoi An, Central Vietnam. Took one or two good shots including this one of a fishing boat. Then I went down to the end of the lane parallel to the river and thought I was lost. There was a little barber shop by the path and the barber pointed to two ways, the long way or the lane way. I took the lane way as I like seeing the houses and gardens.

My last day in Hoian.

This morning cô Ái Trâm arrived home from the market at about 7am. She looked very pretty on her bicycle, hair curled, lipstick and a white sleeveless shirt over jeans. She gave me a warm Bánh Mì that she bought from a neighbour’s stall. Really delicious, but nothing like the southern versions sold at home. Then, bún chả cá (soupy noodles), as if I needed that extra food! Delicious anyway. It's so good that there are so many little shops selling only the one thing and people pop out to buy whatever they want instead of cooking it themselves at breakfast time.

The young men and Anh Tấn Thắng all denied having headaches this morning! Co Uyên and the two kids arrived just as I was about to leave for Saigon. Oh, so many tears people, even 14-year-old cháu Bino. Quốc Anh called as he snuck away from a “crazy” customer, who claimed to be close to Pope Francis. Then he called again at about two pm to check that I am at Danang airport. He says some very heartfelt things. Such a nice friendship. The driver only took half an hour to the Danang airport, not like the last driver who took over an hour.

Chùa Linh Ứng on the Sơn Trà peninsula near Đà Nẵng. The temple has a bonsai garden and many large marble statues. The bonsai trees are really large.
