Did You Know Thursday
Ok, technically it's Friday, but I'm still on a candy high from yesterday, so it's all good. I haven't gotten my grade for the EXTREMELY tough taxonomy test I took on Monday, but I did manage to score a 99 in Anatomy. Here's what I learned this week. * Don't sit in your car with your formaldehyde smelling lab coat and dissection books. It will be all you smell and you'll most likely get a head ache from it. You may even get light headed and fall down stairs (true story). * There are over 600 named muscles in the human body. Luckily I don't have to learn all of them! They are named after regions in the body, insertion and origin points, fascicle organization, position, structural characteristics, and action. * When talking about a muscle, insertion means where it ends and origin of course means where it begins. * Your body is simply amazing- form always fits function and it strives to be as efficient as possible. For example, the External Intercostal muscles elevate the ribs for inspiration and have fascicles that run vertical. The Internal Intercostal muscles aid in expiration and have fascicles that run at a diagonal. This provides extra support for the ribs and helps in overall inhalation and exhalation. * You really need to know the definitions of the following words; antiseptic, disinfectant, sterilization, and sanitizer. Many people use them wrong. For instance, to sanitize something means the following: using an chemical or physical agent and/or a chemical or physical process that reduces the population of microorganisms in any given habitat to a safe, public health level. Safe for the majority of people. Does not claim to kill all. Just makes it safe. Think about that. * Here are some things that are just "sanitized"; food handling equipment, utensils used in food preparation, equipment in food processing plants, equipment used in dairy plants, utensils/dishes in restaurants, washing machines in general, toilets, showers in public places, nail salon foot baths, etc. Am I suggesting you hide out in your house? No. But be smart when you visit a hotel or restaurant. If you happen to get a glass that has residue on it, even lipstick, or a spoon with crusted food, send it back! Wipe down the remote and door handles in the hotel room and for God's sake, put the bed spread in the closet! You don't even want to know what could be on it.... * Sterilization in an autoclave (steam) at 15 foot pounds psi @ 121 degrees C for 15 minutes is the ONLY thing to completely kill microorganisms and their possible spores. Don't be fooled by what's sold in the grocery store. * Ok, I'll take a step back from the ledge now! I will admit I'm buying bleach for my clothes. I haven't used it in years, but after hearing about what could be cultured from your clothes, I am a little freaked. Perhaps this class isn't a good idea for me??? Have a good weekend!! Never stop learning about your world!
