  She found an empty playroom, the perfect place for a couple of teens to get away from the world and do things they probably should not be doing. 

  Diego: About your mom, I was going to say, do you know what she like...does?

  Valeria: Hmmm?

  She had no idea. The moment I feared was going to come true, wasn’t it? 

  Diego: Ummm, you don’t know?

  Valeria shrugs: She’s some kind of model, I guess.

  Diego: I guess that’s right technically but it is not the complete truth...It’s nothing, never mind, just forget it.

  Valeria: Oh no, no no no no. You don’t get to do that, if you have some deep dark secret about my mom I think I have a right to know-

  Diego: Your mom is a pornstar.

  There was only silence after that. Valeria at first wanted to deny it but she knew it made sense. Besides, if Diego was just joking around his face wouldn’t be so red...

  Looks like Valeria decided to spend her birthday checking out a musical performance. That, right there, that’s Diego. Yeah, that little kid that I still don’t like. He’s really following his dreams, I guess I have to respect that...

  Deigo: Do you see it babe? The bright lights? The red carpets? The adoring groupies-

  Valeria: Those first two, sure, you have a nice voice.

  Diego: Of course I do! What did you expect? It’s only a matter of time with me. Handsome good looks, the voice of an angel, the total package!

  Valeria giggles: Alright total package, nice performance, but this wasn’t exactly you headlining SImchella here!

  Valeria thinks his ego is charming, I don’t think it is, I think his head is actually that large. This is the one consistent thing about Diego after all.

Speaking of Valeria, she invited Diego over. It proved to be a mistake, hopefully, though she’s learned her lesson. All she wanted to do was play with her toy bricks with Diego and her sister but that was ruined the moment he directed his jokes at poor Dulce, who did her best to ignore him.

  Diego: Dulce, what kind of name is that? Huh, buttonhead? Hey Val, do you ever think that your sister was a mistake?

  Valeria: What? A mistake?

  Diego: Yeah, like you know, shouldn’t have been born kind of mistake. My mom says your mom probably has a lot of those heh, probably why you don’t live with your REAL dad huh?

That was the line, that right there. Now, understand that none of these kids know what I do for a living, apparently, Diego’s mom knows and he’s heard it and thought it would be a good insult to throw at Dulce. Unfortunately for him, it hit Valeria too.

  Valeria: Take it back, Diego!

  Diego: You know me Val, I don’t take back the things I say! Besides, it’s just jokes! Haha, funny, right?

  Valeria: Diego, take it back or I swear I never want to speak to you EVER again!

  Diego: Pfft, fine. Whatever, you have a buttonhead too by the way!

With that, he was gone, hopefully for good. She can find better friends than that.

  Valeria invited a friend over from school, Diego Fonseca. Don’t know much about the boy but he likes to hang out with Valeria. They play a game of Don’t Wake The Llama, looks like Valeria loses! My poor girl!

En los últimos veinte años el mundo ha visto el crecimiento de líderes “fuertes”, carismáticos, casi siempre varones que dicen conocer como nadie al pueblo, a sus países. En algunos casos, terminan siendo señalados como la “encarnación de la patria”. Líderes que se muestran, en un primer momento, como respetuosos de los cauces y de las instituciones democráticas, pero una vez que han llegado al poder (casi siempre a través de las vías institucionales) empiezan a dinamitar, a demoler la institucionalidad democrática.

Amado líder del escritor y editor argentino Diego Fonseca (Harper-Collins México) desmonta paso a paso estas figuras. Fonseca nos dice que “en América Latina desde el siglo XIX, líderes populistas han conseguido sintonizar con el descontento popular hablándole a la frustración, al deseo insatisfecho y la expectativa de la revancha contra la clase política, por la cual votaron en el pasado”. Amado Líder no surge de la nada. Surge en medio de una ola de crecimiento económico, que se dio a principios de este siglo, y de un optimismo por las instituciones democráticas que, supuestamente, lograrían disminuir las profundas desigualdades sociales y económicas que agobian al continente. Esto no ha sucedido así, y los costos económicos los han asumido los mismos de siempre. Y las ganancias se las han llevado los mismos de siempre. Es de ahí que surgen estos líderes: Del desencanto, del enojo, de la frustración. Pero los peligros son muchos y están latentes, porque estos líderes populistas odian la crítica y necesitan desmantelar el sistema de pesos y contrapesos institucionales creados por los frágiles sistemas democráticos de la región. Líderes como Hugo Chávez, que llegaron a la Presidencia enarbolando la bandera de la Revolución Bolivariana, que significaba la “transformación” y el poner al pueblo en el centro, terminaron sumiendo a su país en una profunda crisis social, económica y democrática, de la cuál aún no sale, porque su sucesor, Nicolás Maduro, ha seguido con el peligroso juego de la polarización: nosotros vs ellos. Y muchos de ellos han tenido que migrar, por ejemplo.
