Przełączając telewizyjne kanały bardzo łatwo pominąć "Boba i jego drzewa". Napiszę więcej. Przelatując raz za razem przez wszystkie 300 kanałów, wielce prawdopodobne, że u Boba będzie to samo - drzewa na ekranie. To slow cinema prosto z festiwali kina niezależnego, na których akurat nadają przegląd filmów o samotności.

Bob jest drwalem z Massachusettes. Źle zainwestował w ziemię, koszty rosną, zaraz do drzwi zapukają wierzyciele. Ale Bob wcale nie myśli dzielić się swoimi problemami z najbliższymi. Dusi więc w sobie przykrości, z pięćdziesiątką na karku, wciąż zasłuchany w gangsta rapie, wolne chwile spędza na oglądaniu golfowych turniejów. Bob marnieje.

I've been trying to pick out my favorite photos from our completely unexpected win this weekend at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival, but what shines most wasn't captured in a photograph. Because the festivities were simultaneously translated the non-Czech speaking audience members were all outfitted with these chunky headsets. When we heard the word, "American" after the announcement of the grand prize, we knew that we'd won because Bob and The Trees was the only film in competition. In a total stupor, we all stood with the bulky headsets in our ears, the wires suddenly tangled in the armrests of our chairs, the battery packs falling, a clumsy, lovely mess. Diego didn't have a speech prepared—we never dreamed we'd be asked out of our seats. And then there we were moments later, accepting the top award for a film we'd spent so many years working to get right so that we could tell a story—a certain story about hard work and courage—in the right way.

All I can say is: eight years ago, some people told me and Diego Ongaro not to leave New York because our creativity would suffer—we'd be too far away to network, to meet the people we had to know in order to further our careers. Others told us not to buy a house with a cruddy foundation in a town where we didn't know a single soul. The Tarasuks were among the first people we met in our adopted town of Sandisfield. Today, our fixer upper has a fixed foundation and we have a second family. I suppose my point is that in this age where we crowdsource for information and hope that people will validate what we like and feel, we should also trust our gut instincts once in a while, and leap.
