Porsche remove diesel and focuses on hybrid & electric
Without announcement, Porsche has just removed the diesel engines of all its models. The arrival of an S Diesel variant of the Cayenne is even questioned, the manufacturer preferring to focus on the electric and plug-in hybrid powertrains.
Since the Diesel Gate, it has been several months since the leaders of Porsche have left running the rumor that the diesel engines were on hold. The German brand has just made a radical decision, but without drumming or trumpeting. The manufacturer comes to end what purists have always considered an aberration: the engine S Diesel has been removed from the catalog of models Macan and Panamera.
Only these two models were concerned, the Cayenne has not hosted a diesel engine since its passage to the third generation, recently presented. His little brother is preparing to follow the same direction, shortly before his restyling to come, drawing a line on the V6 3.0 diesel from the Audi organ bank. Is the Cayenne definitely deprived of a diesel engine? According to the English newspaper AutoExpress, this is not a certainty. But this news has cause for doubt.
As for the sedan, the decision may seem more surprising. The second generation was presented in the summer of 2016, which promoted a new generation V8 diesel, which is recently found in the new Audi A8.
The end of an aberration?
From a strategic point of view, this decision is just as logical as when diesel engines entered the Porsche range: what customers wanted at that time was diesel, especially on the two Macan SUVs. and Cayenne. These last two have also allowed the manufacturer to achieve record results (and profitability) in recent years.
Currently, the trend is reversed: diesel sales fell to 41% market share in January, customers are aware of environmental issues. The opportunity for Porsche to press the accelerator in the development of short-term rechargeable hybrid electric engines, and electric in the long term.
Certainly, the sports luxury brand continues to make its cultural revolution, in line with its massive digital transformation.
