You know who’s cool? Non-binary people.
Non-binary. Genderqueer. Agender. Gender non-conforming.
Whatever lingo they choose to use, they exist. And I think anyone who is brave enough to stand up for who they are like that is incredible.
The general populace still believes there are only two gender identities, but that’s not the case. Don’t believe me? Check out this totally rad graphic* that helps explain not only gender identity, but also gender expression, sexual attraction and romantic attraction. Seriously, check it out. I’ll wait here.
Back? Learn a few things? Good! You can see from the way the diagram is set up that everything is on a scale, meaning that there is an infinite number of ways you can answer the question, “how do you identify?” And on top of that, gender means something different to everyone, even if some of the differences are subtle. It’s pretty cool when you think about it, right? No? Just me geeking out over gender theory?
Aaaanyway. Where I was going with that is that non-binary people are those who don’t fit the gender labels they were given, and not only is that natural and 100% legit, but it should be celebrated. We should celebrate people for their differences, not ostracize them.
So - in the spirit of celebration - make sure you high-five your non-binary friends and let them know you support them!**

** High-five your binary friends too. High-five all your friends. We are all different and all deserve high-fives.
