My anxiety has been making it difficult for me to sleep lately, even if I take a sleeping pill. Because of that and other reasons, I plan to talk to my dr about getting medication. Sometimes I try to listen to music or asmr to calm me down and help me relax, sometimes silence helps, but there are times when none of that works. I was wondering if anyone has advice on what I can do to help myself.
Hey Anon,
Thanks for writing to us. Not being able to fall asleep sucks; the fact that lack of sleep causes increased anxiety sucks even more.
I think speaking to your doctor about it would be a good idea and that is probably what can help you most. Sleeping pills can lose their effect after prolonged use so it is possible that that’s occurred, so I would bring that up. Its possible that the best way to deal with the difficulty sleeping is by dealing with the anxiety with a therapist, so you can discuss that option with your doctor.
In the meantime and in addition to, this post has some tips to help ease nighttime anxiety and falling asleep. Also, check out our helpful resources for some relaxation techniques and calming playlists.

The melatonin didn't work earlier but the last-ditch sleepytime thing did (don't ask), and I finally managed to get some sleep. Consciousness is a burden now.

Insomnia plagues my nights. She tickles me between the ribs, plays with my fingers and toes, counts them one by one as she props open my sagging eyelids with her prickly fingers. She sends shock waves down my trembling spine. She cramps muscles well-past exhaustion, and pinches stretched-thin nerves. After raking her nails down my tightened calves, she sits back and cackles, reveling…
