EVERYONE CONGRATULATE MY GOON ON HER TRANSITION

Maki stronger than me cause if I fumbled an 8 foot tall chivalrous buff lion man I'd kill myself
Theres not nearly enough male nursery monsters neither in Tamagotchi nor Digimon and Im here to Fix It
Omg I've finally done it...this took forever to finish but I'm so happy I finally did!!! All my acrylic digitags are available online now!! I will be doing a discount, however, if you buy the tag you like with the accompanying Digimon next week when I release charms. So feel free to hold out for that, but in the mean time, check them out in all of their shiny glory!!! https://www.etsy.com/shop/Clinkorz?ref=hdr_shop_menu§ion_id=21626561

my brain: draw impmon as smug anime girl icons
What would you say is the exemplar Digimon design? Not the most famous (or even the best, potentially) but the most Digimon-y, the most representative of what's unique about Digimon's design. Like how Pikachu might be the most famous Pokémon, but one of the cute/cool bugs like Galvantula would better represent how their designers like to polish up underappreciated critters.
This is such a crazy good question that I was genuinely stumped on how to answer it for a bit, like there are SO MANY fantastic Digimon designs with all kinds of varying themes and vibes and looking I did made it harder and harder to pick just one.
So! I didn’t!
Instead I’m gonna give two examples, each embodying something that really makes digimon design special. One is about evolution lines and the other is about what makes digimon design ethos great.
First up!
The Chiropmon line from the currently airing Digimon Beatbreak, Chiropmon, NightChiropmon and ScourgeChiropmon.
Just like how pokemon evolve, so to do Digimon. But the key difference is that with a pokemon you can generally have a pretty good idea of what you’re gonna get, dog becomes bigger dog, bug becomes cooler bug etc etc.
Not so with Digimon. In this line for a main character partner Digimon, one intended to be recognizable and marketable we go from funny plushy bat -> Sentai character/humanoid drone -> Literal Bomber Plane You Can Get In And Pilot. Just COMPLETELY off the wall jumps from one level to the next with only color scheme really giving away the connection between them.
And this is one of the most straightforward ones! At every level of evolution the paths for what they can turn into can branch half a dozen times in some cases. To use the pokemon comparison again it’s be like if every single creature was Eevee and also insane, I love it.
As for design ethos, I’m gonna use a favorite of mine, Beelstarmon.
She’s hot, cool as hell and starts as a little orb with bat wings, which are all great but not why I bring her up.
I bring her up because she’s the lady version of another Digimon named beelstarmon, a character initially designed as a dark hero protagonist of the series he was going to be in, got rejected for that role by higher ups and replaced in the protag role by the more heroic Dukemon.
She’s an alternate form of a character who got booted out of his intended role and only exists at all because the original artist drew her off to the side in a magazine once.
Any other series you’d never get a whiff of Beelstarmon outside of maybe a concept art book, but in Digimon she gets to become her own entire character and even had an important role in the most recent Digimon rpg.
She’s indulgent to the core.
THATS what makes digimon designs so special to me and why she’s my example for it, the sheer indulgence, the celebration of excess and absurdity. Digimon wakes up and says “let’s do a silly one” every goddamn day and the gets SILLY.
It’s just so much chaotic fun. That kind of wild creativity is what keeps me checking back in when they do some new series or game, because while they are no stranger to striking out, badly, they swing for the bleachers ever damn time.
My Lead Goon is getting so strong, everyone respect my goon right NOW
They should make a Digimon spectacle fighter where you digivolve in place of a Dante type style swapping, where the trick is you have to dedigivolve to a lower for first to go back up another branch with a different moveset
