Guys I'm really proud of this one. It was a little experiment but I'm really happy how it turned out.
Lesson learned, once again: when in doubt, add more contrast!

Sixgill hagfish Eptatretus hexatrema
The pose was based on this post. Hagfishes are the only vertebrates that can literally tie themselves into knots! They do this to wipe off excess slime. Because they produce. Unholy amounts of slime.
This guy was really fun to do, I feel I got back to what originally motivated me to do these paintings: just a bit of playing around with different colour hues and shades on nice amimals.
Also they look so soft. I want to hold one. It would probably just feel slimy and also immediately slip itself out of my hands, but loook at her.

Common octopus Octopus vulgaris
One of the animals of all time. Also extremely fun to paint because you cannot do it wrong. They change shape. They change colour. Get like two and a half anatomical features in there and you're good. Arrange the arms however you want them to fill up the canvas, no bones stopping you. And at the same time, there's no end to the amount of detail you can add if you want to, endless specks of different colours and bumps and wrinkles.
The common octopus as distributed across much of the world is actually believed to be a species complex - that is, multiple species that have not been distinguished so far!

They have such goofy little eyes, I never realized :D
Aside from being cool ancient weirdos, they're one of the animals I actually most associate with going to the zoo - there's a sturgeon pond outside my local zoo and I always love seeing them!
So now they're in my little zoo too!

I struggled with this beauty a bit but I love her. Why is she so green.
Social species like this are what most people think of when they hear "wasp", but only a small handful of (sub)families actually share this lifestyle! By far most wasps, from the tiny fairyflies to the famous tarantula hawk, live as solitary parasitoids.

Komodo dragon Varanus komodoensis
See, if you'd told me yesterday morning, before I started looking at reference pics, that komodo dragons were this colour- and patternful, I probably wouldn't have believed you. In most pictures they just look brown. But like!
I suspected this mans was freshly peeled at first and that's why he was so vibrant, but then of course I looked closer and. He's literally peeling at the moment. (This is my own picture btw, I just. Forgor.)
Or the zoo lied and it's a whole different monitor lizard lol.
