Highway Under A Runway
This is true and it’s happening in Varanasi, India. The Lal Bahadur Shastri Airport in Babatpur around 26Km from Varanasi will host India’s first airport which will run a highway below its runway.
As per the reports of TOI, this will help Airport to premises allowing large aircraft to land on the airport, simultaneously expanding the current highway to a 4 lane road.
Germany’s Leipzig Airport has something similar, where the highway is part of airport allowing users to view the gigantic flight to taking off above their head.
The airport plans to expand its runway by building an underpass have gotten a nod from the Airports Authority of India. This arrangement will keep the Varanasi-Lucknow National Highway 56 intact.
This will help expand its airport to expand its runway to 4075 km against the existing 2750 km, allowing larger cargo and Boeing aircraft to land. Officials claim the runway expansion and underpass construction will begin simultaneously.
