Sonic and Shadow for @creatingblackcharacters DTIYS challenge!
I have a habit of doing DTIYS challenges in the same pose as the original art/reference image, but they were so fun to draw I feel like I should do some screenshot redraws with them. Thanks for the fun challenge, I love a good reason to get into Sonic fanart again. Details under the cut!
Logo References:
The vibe I was going for in the designs were based on these two logos, which is especially obvious in their jackets. I went back and forth on hairstyles for a bit but really liked the idea of dyed locs, especially for Shadow since his design just Felt like a guy who would dye his roots and match them to his eyeliner.
The gold eyelets felt like a good way to get gold accents onto their shoes, and Shadow's design has way more gold incorporated into it which is reflected here in his jewelry and hair accessories, but I thought it'd be nice to give Sonic a pair of gold earrings too since it would balance with the gold in his shoes a little better. I hope Sonic's sweatpants don't look too much like jeans! Pants aren't exactly my strong suit but I wanted to give him something comfortable to run in.
Hair and Outfit References:
Ok-Dot9973 on reddit (posted in r/locs, someone actually brought up Sonic in his comments which was fun to see after basing Shadow's hair accessories off of his) (shoutout to one of my mutuals who sent me his post originally, lmk if you want me to tag you!)
Bouchards Men's Letterman Jacket (doesn't look like the model's name is shown anywhere on the webpage) (thought doing blue stars on tan jacket sleeves would be a good reference to the blue stars on the yellow ring in the logo, and using a Letterman Jacket felt like a good way to keep the blue body and tan arms from Sonic's original design)
Hornet for @creatingblackcharacters DTIYS challenge! She's one of my favorite video game characters in general so this was super fun ✌️🕷
Digital Toast Doodles Design Details:
- she has her signature cloak over a black ballet leotard and matching pointe shoes, which felt like a good way to incorporate the solid black limbs/body of the original design
-spiderwebs woven into her hair and shoes to show her weaver background, as well as the tiny spider earring for the same reason
- made her silk into a ribbon attached to her needle to fit with the ballet theme and the ribbons on her shoes
- gave her some eyeliner, mascara and lip gloss to match her cloak and ribbon bc the way she's referred to as the Gendered Child [her being born as a child of the pale king who's specifically his Daughter as opposed to the genderless vessel children] made me want to go very femme in her design
