        “ i suppose so — “ words are spoken after a moment’s thought. it gives his pride a moment to soak up the words, to allow a smirk to pull at the corners of his mouth. he had been reading some book on hexes in the common room, having already finished & double checked his assignments for the night. he might have allowed it to inflate his ego if he were not so tired… pale eyes shut for half a moment, to give them a rest from the tiny print sprawled across the page & he leans his head back. he was ‘ real smart ‘ but ‘real smart’ wasn’t enough to be best in the year. he had swaggered into hogwarts thinking it would be easy to be the best — but that damned granger girl always seemed to best him. whatever his pride had gained from the compliment was near immediately discarded. his thoughts were like poison --- it was infuriating. 

his smirk falls & he suddenly feels very agitated.  is it because of a pride with self-inflicted wounds? perhaps. even so, why does the other care whether or not he’s smart? if it meant anything to him, wouldn’t he be studying himself...? expression twists into something closer to a scowl & the excited smirk from before is tucked away for another day. a day when he’s more than ‘ real smart ‘. he snaps his book shut, the action short & bordering aggressive. maybe if the other weren’t a housemate, he’d have chucked it at him... but he wasn’t foolish enough to turn on one of his own, no matter how much frustration built in his chest. pale eyes rest upon the other & he feels his voice rise slowly in his throat, snaking out & regarding the other with caution, “ what does it matter to you if i’m smart or not? “
