n Wed. February 6th 2013, Liberation Art & Culture Works, Liberation Movie Night and Philadelphia Printworks invite you to Silk City Diner as we host DILLADELPHIA: A Celebration of the Life and Music of James "J DILLA" Yancey. Through his work with Slum Village, The Roots, Erykah Badu and countless others, J DILLA's innovations have literally changed Hip Hop's DNA creating new permutations that continue to grow nearly 6 years after his tragic death in 2006. Dilla's music is loved throughout the world and
Philadelphia has been no exception. J Dilla's name has always rang bells here and his beats have banged in PLENTY of speakers throughout the #215. Immediately following his passing, several amazing parties were thrown in his honor (including the original Dilladelphia jam held 2010) in which local Philly artists, DJ's and fans came together to celebrate Dilla and mourn his passing. Inspired by these events, Liberation Art & Culture Works and it's sponsors have devised this new Dilladelphia as part live showcase for local artists that are continuing and expanding on Dilla's influence and musical legacy, part Dance Party in which Dilla lovers will pack the dance floor and get loose as DJ John Morrison spins selections from J Dilla's DEEP catalogue ALL NIGHT! The Evening will be punctuated with live performances from some of the city's dopest artists, Hosted by Paul S. Frosty @SFrosty215 and including a performance from special guests Sela and more Special Guests to be announced!!! We will also be taking Donations for the J-Dilla Foundation, a charity established in honor of Dilla with the expressed goal of educating young musicians and keeping Dilla's legacy alive. Special Shout out and mucho mucho Love to The J-Dilla Foundation, Philadelphia Printworks, SFX, Sela, Silk City and the whole #215!!! Come through and Party with us. Get Dis Honey © 2008
A cover of Slum Village's Get Dis Money instrumental recorded by Y?Arcka & myself back in 2008. At the time, we were working on creating covers of some of our favorite tracks without using any digital instruments, and really sans traditional instrument. We called it First Nature. This song was created with:
+ A drumstick, My voice , his beatbox, and a cookie tin.
The only digital leniency we allowed was in mixing. We basically recorded it straight, listening to the instrumental in one ear and recording our parts all the way through. Sound exploration in action in Dilladelphia. ♡
