tldr; rambling about my two ocs who are both trans nb and their toxic relationship. the transfemme has a lot of suffering going on (but so does the other).

was contemplating for a while ab how vex and haze are trans nb, where vex is transmasc and haze is transfemme. and grappling with whether it's transphobic to have haze be the one that's transfemme when her character on the surface is an executioner of a colonial force. god forbid i'd make her a cop, bc she isn't, her best equivalent would be an assassin, since her role has always been to kill singular "criminals" in the name of enforcing her god's religious law. still, making her an arm of a colonizer, and the secondary antagonist had me going back and forth often. then i reminded myself that the other oc in this relationship is just as villainous. equally toxic yadda yadda.

however, haze is much more nuanced than i initially tried to generalize her to be in the eyes of the imaginary audience in my mind. nuanced in a way that i sadly won't be able to show anytime soon, even as the current comic arc in vex's perspective draws to a close. and my initial plans for the next comic to be in her perspective may be too complex to execute.

haze's purpose has always been to be vex's foil. she is an asian person that is a generational victim of religious colonization. (specifically korean bc of catholic colonization, as a mirror to vex being filipino as a victim of the same). she knows nothing else besides the crippling guilt of being something unaccepted by her family and society. she considers herself a failure. even when she is accepted in the eyes of her god, it is only bc she has found a way to be useful to it, and what marginal respect she receives for it is still tainted by being a failure. she lives every day unable to be happy with having the body her god gave her, bc of the constant reminder that it can be taken away if she steps out of line.

she thinks this fear is her fault. she sees herself as the failure everyone tells her to be. she tries every day to make up for it, and despite being in a high position that is deserving of reverence, she is still treated with the bare minimum and all the passive, underhanded, and snide commentaries. and she never gets angry at the disrespect. it is above her to get angry (lest she step out of line). so she swallows it down, the build up of every indignity, and funnels that anger into the one person that lets her feel it without judgement

and she has to kill that person. bc that's her failure. the one that went out of line, that went against their once shared god. they walk and talk and breathe and taunt her with every second they continue to. the one person she can justifiably be angry with, bc they have hurt countless people, taken countless lives, and sewn enough chaos to warrant a constant target on their back. she knows they do this without care (bc they too are exhausted from constant persecution). there are countless justifications for why they're evil and above redemption, justifications she is reminded of constantly, wraps around herself in prayers before every strike and splash of blood and injury she receives in turn. and yet. she cannot bring herself to kill them without enough hesitation for them to slip away once again.

conclusion: haze being transfemme is a very central crux of her character.
