Dime Store
I walked passed there again today and again he wasn't there. I don't know where my friend has gone. His name is Malcolm and each day he sits in front of the dime store preaching to all who pass by.
We became friends after I shared a sandwich with him after class one afternoon. After that each day I would walk by the store and speak with him. He's always so kind and caring about everyone, even those who mistreat him. Yet for the last few days he hasn't been where we meet.
Today I walked into the store and asked the clerk if she knew where he was, she didn't know. As time went on I kept walking by and Malcolm was never there. Time changed us all, I grew older and planned to move on in life. I never forgot my friend and all he had said over the time we knew each other. I just really wish I knew what happened to him.
One day as I passed the old store I saw a man sitting in Malcolm's spot. He looked just like him as if he hadn't aged or anything. As I went closer I thought that can't be him but I was curious. I walked over to the man and called out my friends name "Malcolm" I said quietly. We locked eyes for a moment and then he spoke. Nice to see you again.
I was in shock and asked him where he had gone for so long. He told me he never left it was me who moved on from him. He said as I grew my focus changed and he was no longer the brightest light that I could see. As I stood there I thought back and remembered that yes he was still there I just stopped noticing him. He said it's was fine that it happens to us all. As we change so too does out world view. The fact that I came back and can now see him again means that once more my view is going to change.
Never lose sight of those right in front of you. Never lose those who are important to your peripheral vision. For if you truly care for and value them even as you view may change, they will always remain to be seen by you...

Vintage neon JJ Newberry sign on Lake Street in Owego, New York, October 11, 2017. I’d have loved to see this lit, but its mere existence was amazing enough. Newberry’s was a step up from dime stores like Woolworth, more like a McCrory’s for all you retail historians out there. The chain went bankrupt circa 2001. In this case the vacant Newberry store is now an antique mall. In my first-ever visit to Owego I was delighted by the emphasis on history throughout its downtown area--a nice place to visit.
