Porphyria at Noon
Sunlight spills across my skin --
wax-warm, dandelion's bright smile --
raising blisters, carnelian and shiny.
She Had Enough
In a puddle of blood on a floor,
where wind flutters the shirt that you tore
when a screaming steel knife
in the hand of your wife
cut the thread of your life, and then more.
'Neath a table on kitchen's old floor,
where your babes saw their daddy torn
by a gutting sharp knife,
by their mother, your wife --
seeing you loosing your life, nothing more.

if someone turns down
everything you have to offer
with repeated nonsensical
and erroneous excuses...
.
your active choice
not to deal with them,
protect your valuable time,
and maintain
healthy boundaries,
is a reasonable reaction...
.
while they must choose
whether they want to face
personal accountability
and the consequences
of their choices
and actions...

now
or later

We Were Roommates
Do you remember holding hands
on an emerald square of carpet,
(the last thing unpacked)
surrounded by cardboard boxes
scrawled with your name and
mine? Waiting for parents to
carry our things and us away,
to walk over the aluminum
threshold of the double doors
that separate high school and
college?
I said we'll still be friends,
and talk every day. You nodded.
Said that it's wasn't fair, two years
wasn't enough, and you'll miss me.
We have phones and email and
ICQ, I said, and you nodded.
You cried on that carpet. I didn't.
I meant every word I said. You didn't.

the last thing
i remembered about you
was how every time
i reached out my hand
to find yours,
you pulled away
like i was a stranger
trying to
steal you
