Stephen's Dimension-hopping and Tony's Anxiety

One of the running theme of Ironstrange fanfics is Stephen's dimension-hopping paces at a different time velocity than earth. That means sometimes he can be back in a week, a month, or just an hour. This leaves Tony hanging.

And me too, Tony. Me too.

Every time I read a fic about dimension-hopping meetings or fight, I wait with Tony for Stephen to come back. This wakes up my anxiety in the deep pit of my chest. The feeling is unsettling.

People with anxiety have propensity of favouring control over surprises. They like making schedules, to-do-list etc, to prepare their mental state for the expected events. Personally, I like routine because I know what to set my expectations on. E.g. I have a day job with time range unvaried much. If my friends ask me to hang out (or zoom meeting in lockdown), they set a schedule beforehand so everyone is mentally prepared to hold a conversation.

Back to Tony and Stephen. Imagine as Tony---with crap ton of mental health issues---facing Stephen says: hey I've got a meeting/minor fighting/issues in Dimension A and normally it will take 1-day ish but time runs differently there so I dunno when I go home.

And this happens frequently because of his job.

Imagine Tony, now retired as an Avenger, perhaps still working at R&D, staying at home/lab a lot. It means he's the receiving end of the waiting game. Shit, it feels like an LDR, doesn't it?

I'm totally fine if a writer likes to explore this theme as a plot point for angst or h/c. But sometimes it gets me thinking, what if the time is severely warped in that hellhole dimension, so that when Stephen comes back after what he thinks is just another 3-day excursion he comes back to Tony in actual one year later?

And please. Please. I'm calming my mind now because I'm thinking the worst possible scenario that might cause you to throw the stones at me:

What if he comes back way too late?

So anytime someone writes a fic exploring the dynamic of waiting Tony and working Stephen, I'm waiting too.
