—— “We need to baby proof the house.”
Jaxson glanced up from the music sheets spread out in front of her. Baby proof the house? Was Ezra being serious? She snorted and shook her head, “Babe, I’m only fourth months pregnant right now and apart from that this baby wont need any safety precautions considering it wont walk for a while so we have like a year or something before we worry about that.” It was a nice sentiment though, him wanting to make their home a safe place for their baby. It made her chest flutter with adoration for the boy –no, the man in front of her. She thinks it’s a bit funny how he still makes her all warm and give her butterflies as though they were nineteen and twenty again by saying the simplest things like baby proofing the damn house. “Alright, here’s the deal, you can baby proof certain things but not everything we are not going to be those parents.”
—— "Did you hear that? That was a cough.“
“That was totally a cough.” Jax nodded, agreeing with Ezra while she crossed her arms over her chest standing in front of Jonah with a knowing look. The three year old mimicked her, crossing his own small arms over his chest and pouting, “Was not.” The thing was, Jonah woke up a bit under the weather and both her and Ezra have been trying to convince him to take his medicine but Jonah has been trying to convince them that he isn’t sick. It has been going on like this all morning and now he’s coughing. “Jojo, you have to take your medicine before it gets worse,” sighed Jaxson, dropping to be at level with him. He’s so cute when he’s pouting and she just wants to pull him into her arms and snuggle him up but not right now, “How’s this, you take the medicine and we’ll have daddy make us some dinosaur soup while we watch your favorite movie, yeah?” Jonah let out a long dramatic sigh (dramatics he got from her) and finally nodded, “Toy Story?” Jaxson nodded and then looked up at Ezra with a little smirk on her face, “Looks like you’re making lunch.”
—— “Do we need to go to the hospital?”
“Well I mean my water kinda just broke? So yes, Ezra, we have to go to the hospital!” she had given him this incredulous look but she couldn’t really blame him since they’re both kinda new to this. Oh god, oh, god, oh god, her water just broke she’s gonna go into labor soon and they need to get to the hospital but first grab all the essentials they need, of course Ezra could always come back for their things but she’d rather not have him leave her side at all. “Crap, um, let’s just go before the contractions start I don’t want it to happen here.” She didn’t like this one bit, she had woken up in a mess before she realized what happened at three in the morning and it’s a little behind schedule but she’s guessing the little trooper has had enough in there. She grabbed her phone and one of Ezra’s big sweaters, making her way to the car. She needs to call her dad, she needs to call him so he can fly out as soon as possible. “Ohmygod, babe, I’m going to give birth!” she blurted, she was half excited and half dreading the pain she knows is coming for her.
—— “I’m a horrible father."
“No, no, Ezra, baby you’re not,” Jaxson had quickly stood up to go to her husband’s side when he begun pacing the room. Just five minutes prior Riley had stormed off to her room in a huff and tears nearly threatening to fall out. The thing was, Riley hasn’t been doing so well i her classes, it was her freshman year in high school and their little A and B daughter had suddenly plummeted into straight Ds and maybe a C at best but now there’s two solid Fs in her report card making her GPA go below what is expected for college and sure it’s only freshman year and they’ve cut her some slack because Ezra never wanted to push his kids (not that Jonah needed much pushing, he was an incredible student) into being better than they were. She understood completely, knowing that was how his father treated his sisters into becoming prodigies by…force. But this was completely unacceptable, Riley has to face the consequences that because of her latest report card she wont be able to attend the concert she wants with her friends and might have to end up going to summer school to make up her missing credits. “She knew this was coming, we’ve been telling her to just work a little harder but she doesn’t listen. Just because she said she ‘hates’ you – which is a total lie – does not mean she’s telling the truth, she’s just upset but she’ll get over it,” she didn’t like seeing Ezra like this, the look on his face he got when Riley mumbled those words and Jaxson had sent her to her room, “I know you said you didn’t want to be like your father but sometimes we have to give them a little push here and there. You’ve been her dad for fourteen years and you can’t brand yourself a horrible father for saying ‘no’ for once.” She loves you, she really does. You’ve been there for her so many times and have done so many incredible things for her and for all of us, so I don’t want you repeating that ever again, okay?”
—— "We’re going to be parents.”
Those five little words cause a shiver of excitement to run up her spine. They were going to be parents. They were going to have a baby that they were going to take care of and feed and play with and love and it was so…amazing. It was incredible how they even ended up here to begin with. Jaxson curled on Ezra’s side in bed, drawing small shapes on chest with her fingers, with his own running through her hair after Jaxson told him that’s she’s most definitely pregnant when a couple years prior they had been in his dorm panting against each other’s mouths nearly about to have sex but making a vow to never, ever catch feelings for the other, that it would ruin their friendship and neither of them would do with that. But now they’re married, living in Seattle, both having the jobs they wanted, in a wonderful apartment (which they’ll have to move out of soon because a kid is on the way), next to each other, in love and…about to start a family. It was surreal and Jaxson wouldn’t trade any of this for the world. “We are, we’re going to have a family I --” she sat up, propping herself on her shoulder to look down at him, smiling widely, fond probably seeping out her, “I love you, a lot. We’re going to be the best damn parents in all Seattle, just you watch.” And with that, she leaned down to kiss him, softly and sweetly.
—— “I think we make good parents.”
Jaxson was exhausted. Holding a birthday party for a five year old was more work than either she or Ezra thought it would be. Who knew their son could do indecisive and picky. First he had wanted an Iron Man theme (which Jaxson approved because Iron Man will forever be her favorite) but then he wanted Batman (to which Jaxson scowled secretly because she didn’t like him very much) and then he wanted a Toy Story theme and it just went on and on and on. He had finally settled on one theme and he couldn’t take it back: Peter Pan. It had been settled and discussed and her and Ezra got to work. Jaxson wanted to make a cupcakes too for her son’s birthday while she had Ezra order a Bounce House with anything closely related to Peter Pan. They made masks to pass out based off wild animals and the Lost Boys, the piñata had been Captain Hook. The cake they ordered went well with her cupcakes and they had pizza and drinks and handmade goodies and little gift bags and th day had come and it started out as a mess. Ezra and Jax had both been running around trying to fix last minute things and make sure someone kept an eye on Riley and had so many parents over and oh no, where was Richard? He had been running late and he was the one who was supposed to place the Peter Pan hat on Jonah’s head. So many things to do and all for one birthday and only Ezra and Jax to fix it because this was a Hansens emergency and had to work together. So now, finally plopped in bed after cleaning and making sure Richard and Jonah were tucked in (they let him sleepover) and RIley was safely in her crib, they can finally get the rest they deserve. “Hell yeah, we do,” mumbed Jaxson, “We’re the fucking Hansens.”
—— “Was that a word?”
“I don’t think so, it sounded more like a gurgle.” replied Jaxson, not looking up from the recent emails her dad sent her about the company. She hadn’t been able to help her dad out in a while, been to busy taking care of Riley and making sure Jonah didn’t have another tantrum about his little sister. But Jonah was over at Richard’s and Riley was in the kitchen with them for feeding and it was a bit peaceful. Perfect time to catch up with work and put her input on things and go over contracts her dad has been making. But then “Da--ada.” This time Jaxson looked up from her laptop screen, blinking because. “Daa-da!” Jaxson’s mouth dropped a little because Riley just said “Dad” well not exactly but it’s close and ohmygod their baby just said her first word! “Okay I definitely heard it that time. And she was grinning now, covering her mouth with her hands because her first word. And it’s Dad. And Ezra couldn’t look happier that Jaxson stood up and went to kiss both of them on the cheek and giggle because now Riley kept on repeating it while waving her little arms and this was a wonderful Saturday afternoon.
—— “Remember when we couldn’t wait for him to talk?”
Jaxson nodded, laughing under he breath quietly as they both watched their son go off into a talk about something he and Richard did this day at school. He was so excited and was going on a mile a minute and Jaxson had a bit trouble understanding with how fast he was talking. All he knows is that they got a new art teacher and that she’s really nice and something about finger painting (which would explain why his fingers are stained blue and green) and making something for Riley’s room. He was even using hand gestures and Jaxson turned to hide her face in Ezra’s chest, wrapping both arms around his waist as she giggled because their son was too cute and even sometimes Jaxson didn’t know what to with herself. “I’ve only caught on too a couple things he’s said because frankly, I can’t catch up,” she mumbled, pulling back to look up at Ezra, leaning up to press a quick kiss to his jaw and look back at where her son was now pulling things out of his backpack, papers and papers filled with paint she could smell from where they were standing. “Look at him, from his first word to this, reckon he should become one of those ads spokesmen who talk really fast in the end of every commercial?”
—— “Welcome to the world, little one.”
Jaxson couldn’t even say in response to that cute little statement because she was holding back a sob of pure and utter joy when they handed her their little boy. He’s so small and tiny and messy and suddenly the harsh pain she felt was gone, just like that. The moment she gave birth to him it went away and now her heart was swelling with love by looking at him and her eyes were stinging. She was going to cry. “Hey baby,” she said, her voice a little watery as she grabbed hold of one of the baby’s little fists; he was crying, as he should, that’s a good sign. God, she couldn’t believe she was holding their son, Jaxson looked up at Ezra, a choked laugh escaping her lips because this is it, this is their life now. A brand new addition to the Hansens family. One of the nurses came back to take him away for cleaning and Jax reluctantly let go but knew it was essential. She just wants to hold him and those nine months and that pain she went through for hours nearly breaking Ezra’s hand and cursing up a storm, it was all worth it because it led to this moment. “I love you.” she stated, sniffling while she looked back at Ezra, “I love you a lot and I love our baby.” And she was getting emotional and she made grabby hands for Ezra for a quick hug before they got her cleaned up as well because the dumb boy she met in college was now the father of her their son and her husband and they are going to start a family and she’s so glad they broke their little vow because that led to this and she couldn’t ask for anything else.
