So my first week of classes is done, It was a little stressful for a couple of reasons.
I plan to post more throughout this year than I have in years past. I do have one question though.
I’ve been going over Pinterest to try and find healthy ways to eat within college dining halls and can’t find anything. All I’m finding is how to eat healthy in the dorms, which basically consists of you having to be able to afford groceries.
If I were to create a post about eating healthy in the food courts, would people want that?
One of my favorite meals at Smith is when Comstock/Wilder serves Noodle Bowl! My friends and I always line up early so we can get the food as fast as possible. Comstock/Wilder is Smith’s Asian Fusion dining halls, and while it isn’t the same as my mom’s homemade noodles, it’s something.
Food was actually a big adjustment for me, coming to Smith. At home, I would eat Chinese food every day and rarely went out to restaurants or even fast food chains to eat. At Smith, I had to learn how to eat raw vegetables far more often than I was used to. I definitely appreciate all the hard work dining hall staff put into producing mass quantities of high quality food and Smith’s commitment to using local produce, but it was a hard adjustment nevertheless. After over two years at Smith, I have definitely learned how to change my diet and I have learned to be more adventurous with my food. But it’s things like Noodle Bowl that let me have a taste of home while at Smith!
Can someone who is gluten free give an example of what meals look like at Dawes? Thanks!
Hi there!
I eat at Dawes for every meal because I am strictly gluten free, and having Dawes has been a lifesaver. To eat there you have to be registered with ODS which is easy to do, just have your doctor (either GP or specialist) write a note explaining the need, and you’ll have access with your OneCard.
Dawes does not serve hot breakfast, but there are many different types of things that you have access to including gf bagels, english muffins and cereals. Lunch is the first hot meal of the day and is usually something like paninis, sandwiches or tacos with fruit and a bag of chips or something. On weekends brunch replaces lunch and there are more traditional breakfast items such as eggs, home fries, fruit, muffins, and bacon. We even had gf donuts a couple times! Dinner varies a lot, we have breakfast for dinner (otherwise known as brinner) about twice a month, and other times there’s rice or pasta dishes, usually a meat option, and some sort of vegetables and a salad bar. There is always a dairy free option, and a vegan/vegetarian option. There is also generally no peanut or other nut products used because of the number of allergies.
Let me know if you have any more questions about Dawes and I look forward to seeing you there next year!

Hi! With all of the house posts going around, I was wondering if there's a way to see which houses have full kitchens? I love baking and it's very important to me that I have access to an oven :)
Hi! Generally the houses that don’t have dining halls have kitchens, but there’s a couple that have both! You can see details about all the houses here.

To add on, Northrop and Gillett have a full kitchen and dining halls! Additionally, there is a kitchen in the Campus Center which students can reserve.

Hello! Prospective Smithie here :) I was just wondering if Smith has their meal plans available online? I looked at the school's website but I'm still confused.
Hi! So Smith only really has one meal plan - we get 10 “swipes” into dining halls every day (1 swipe = 1 entrance into any dining hall - you can eat as much as you want once you’re inside). I’ve posted more details about dining at Smith here. If you want to peruse the menus at Smith, click here (right now the dining halls are on a summer schedule so most of them aren’t serving anything, but if you check back during the school year you can get a more accurate representation of what meals actually look like). Hope this helps!
