Admiral Lord Nelson’s Birthday Dinner Service, 1798 (just a part of it)
This dinner service was a gift to Admiral Lord Nelson from Sir William and Lady Hamilton. It is of English, probably Coalport, manufacture decorated in Naples for Nelson’s 40th birthday on 29 September 1798. This service was shown in Naples as part of a grand ball with 1700 guests in his honour. The ball took place only a week after his great triumph at the Battle of the Nile (1 August). Each piece has his initials HN and a anchor in the middle. Surrounded by oak leaves and panels, showing scenes from Alexandria, Aboukir Bay and other Mediterranean places.
