ALSO: very much focused on the “contingency” part of the contingency tapes…given a contingency plan is usually made for managing a severe risk with catastrophic consequences, my theory is that the tapes might be a coded history message on how to handle the consequences if the Substitute’s box was ever reactivated? Maybe Pythagoras will even try to use them to figure out how to stop the Substitute…

okok onto your thoughts:
here's the thing- considering how flippantly the professor and ryan threw out the box and didn't make an effort to destroy or contain anything, I don't think they take the substitute super seriously after his defeat. this makes me think there wouldn't really be any kind of contingency for him, because they're fairly certain he's defeated and they don't consider him enough of a threat to even mitigate him coming back in any meaningful way by not JUST HAVING HIM TURNED OFF IN THE DUMPSTER AROUND THE BACK.
but you know what IS catastrophic enough to warrant a contingency? pythagoras' hostile takeover. while I don't think the professor would have ever predicted this kind of thing exactly, the fact that there was such a complicated succession structure in place makes me think someone at least planned for a catastrophic takeover or other unfortunate fate of the show and showrunners like this, and of we know there was already planning for this with the succession structure, it makes sense there may be related contingency tapes.
where I theorize the substitute comes in is WHY we're seeing these tapes- everyone was taken out by pythagoras, who would be left to put the contingency in place? definitely not pythagoras, he's won and he'd NEVER willingly release something that could disrupt that to the public. the studio rat could maybe have stumbled upon them if pythagoras threw them away with everything else, but if it's just him showing us, why the little "ft professor mcnasty"? (see my other post about why I think this is more than just a meta indicator of it being puppet history.)
the substitute, having the professor's thoughts and memories up to end of s4, would know about the contingency tapes if they're something the professor was involved in creating (which feels like a given). he also has maybe some motivation to pursue the contingencyWait a second oh my fucking god guys sorry I had a thought oh god. guys we saw the genie lamp in the dumpster. guys. the substitute has the genie lamp again like he can just grab it it's right there. he just needs skin and he could genie it up. what the fuck
