Vii Men åsynen av land har alltid förbluffat dig, någonstans finns jord äldre än exil och försök om du förmår, dina ögon föreställer sig bara det leriga diket framför det fuktiga mandel trädet, bebyggelsens oroande  utbredning stenen din farbror drämde in sitt namn i en annan farbrors ansikte, dina planeter är dina händer, ditt hus bakom dina ögonbryn och kalkerpappret på pärlor av öar med liktgiltiga och omkastbara former, nu är Guadeloupe en krabba fastnypt vid midjan, nu ändras Nevis gränser av misstag och historiens ovisshet, nu sitter du på Standard Five, papperet blir papprigt av dina fingrars svett du inser att de här raderna inte kommer att spela roll, ditt land är en betvingad march på botten av Saragossa, din väg tilltrasslad

Land to Light On,

Så märkligt. Idag fick jag för mig att titta tillbaka på mina översättningar av Dionne Brand. Land to Light On. Det känns som en livstid sedan jag höll på med det. Vet inte om det någonsin kommer bli klart, jag fann Dionne Brand för ca 4-5 år sedan. En tid då jag sökte efter det perfekta ämnesvalet för en litteraturvetares ambitioner. Och kanske i en tid då översättningsakten i sig var ett konkret sätt att bli bättre, att må bättre. Så djävulskt svårt det var. Inte alltid men ofta. Den främsta anledningen att jag började översätta Land to Light On var att jag ville läsa dikterna så noggrant som möjligt. Jag ville se hur Brand hade byggt sin dikt... Kanske för att Dionne Brand var en av de poeter som berörde mig på ett särskilt sätt, i en särskild tid i mitt liv,, hon formulerade och satte ord på ett raseri, en sorg och stillnad som jag inte hade funnit någon annanstans.

Nåväl, vi får se det kanske blir klart, eller inte,  vid det här laget har jag lärt mig att det inte är meningen att man ska göra klart allt. Vissa saker gör det de skulle i ens liv utan att man blir färdiga.

My thinking regarding the study of Afro-Diasporic communities' religious traditions  arises out of two questions:  how do diasporic identities shape religious practices and how religious traditions in diaspora provide meaningful ways of belonging for Afro-Diasporic Communities.  Dionne Brand's "A Map to the Door of No Return: Notes to Belonging" (Vintage, Canada, 2001) has played a pivotal role in the way I frame and think about these and related questions. Let me share a phrase from this magnificent work: "But to the Door of No Return which is Illuminated in the consciousness of Blacks in the Diaspora there are no maps/ This door is not mere physicality. It is a spiritual location. It is also perhaps a psychic destination" (1).
