And that play I wrote was hilarious.  Really, you can’t judge “The Lives of the Saints” as blasphemous unless you sat through to the big Judgement Day chorus line!  No sense of fun, these people.

can you talk about the jedi + catholicism? i've been trying to articulate the strong influences and parallels and i'd love to hear your thoughts

honestly? the jedi remind me most of catholicism in the prequels, which is—probably not accidental, given what lucas and I don’t know about the political weight and scope of buddhism.

it is pretty clear from the Original Trilogy that the force and the jedi are not patterned off western religions—if you’ve seen that interview with donnie yen, he’s right when he says that lucas was drawing from explicitly east asian tropes, and heavily influenced by kurosawa, and similar filmmakers. 

however, lucas doesn’t have a ton of knowledge about how buddhism (or taoism, etc., it’s a pretty generic americanized impression of “eastern religion” he’s conjuring up) sits on the political landscape, and the way it interacted with power historically. Rather, lucas is a westerner, and any time you start talking about religion and the state and military might to a westerner, you are probably talking about catholicism, at least a little bit. (even when you’re talking to an american, though in that case we’ve got a whole hangup about generic protestant “christianity” which mostly dovetails with catholicism but sometimes doesn’t.)

it’s pretty clear to me that the prequels have exchanged the generic “eastern religion” with pretty clear parallels to catholicism—a powerful and state-sponsored religious order, equal parts military and spiritual, dressed like franciscans, focused on denying its adherents pleasure, passion, and things of the world. They’re templars during the final days of the crusades, with Philip IV breathing down their necks and a dozen holy sites for pilgrims that will collapse to nationalism (see: jedha)

the actual jedi religion though? not sure how actually catholic it is.

batman v superman was a great movie and frankly i use it as a barometer of people i want to talk to

I don’t mind like making fun of it in a friendly way, I’m the first person to make ‘he touch his titty’ jokes but HONESTLY it is nowhere near as bad a movie as people make it out to be.
