A Prayer to Artemis

O Savior-Goddess, Artemis, Light-Bringer, stand upon The land of Pollis; grant your pleasing light To him and to his children. It's easy -- he knows well The scales of Justice coming straight from Zeus. Grant too, Artemis, that the Graces, speeding through This grove, toss their light sandals on the flowers.

φωσφόρος ὦ σώτειρ᾽, ἐπὶ Πόλλιδος ἕσταθι κλήρων, Ἄρτεμι, καὶ χαρίεν φῶς ἑὸν ἀνδρὶ δίδου, αὐτῷ καὶ γενεῇ τόπερ εὐμαρές: οὐ γὰρ ἀφαυρῶς ἐκ Διὸς ἰθείης οἶδε τάλαντα δίκης. ἄλσος δ᾽,Ἄρτεμι, τοῦτο καὶ ἂν Χαρίτεσσι θεούσαις εἴη ἐπ᾽ ἀνθεμίδων σάμβαλα κοῦφα βαλεῖν.

Goddess of culverts and lighthouses, goddess of burrows and coves and safety in narrow escapes, stand where you stand and shine like kindness on our children. From you they learn right and wrong, and how to wear capes for hunting or self-concealment, how to find a turtle’s egg-cache, or a rabbit warren, how to distinguish a dangerous impulse from a lovely whim, when to keep a flower or a friend, and where it’s safe to swim. It’s hard work, I know, to shine all the time, but it’s never pointless. Sometimes it’s divine.

Torchbearing deliverer, upon the lands of Pollis stand,

     Artemis, and give your graceful light to the man,

and to his family; this is an easy thing: for not weakly

     versed from Zeus is he in the scales of just order.

 And Artemis, do you also let the Graces range over this

     grove, sending their nimble sandals over the blooms.
