“They say, Never let them see your weakness, Never let them see you fall But if they don’t see my weakness, They might not see me at all
Maybe if I’m brave enough To throw it all away Someone will come and rescue me And I just might hear them say,
I need you—Just the way you are. I see you—You’re really not that far. I want you—To be by my side. And I love you—You have nothing to hide, From me...
I’m like some store-front window, Always showing something new. People turn and smile at me, But they’re just looking through.
Maybe if I paint myself, In mud, and ash, and clay... Someone will come and wash me clean— Someone who wants to hear me say,
I need you—Just the way you are. I see you—You’re really not that far. I want you—To be by my side. And I love you—You have nothing to hide, From me...”
Song Review: Dirk Powell with Rhiannon Giddens - “I Ain’t Playing Pretty Polly”
Dirk Powell’s new single is a repudiation of the songs he played coming up.
Joined by Rhiannon Giddens on backing vocals, Powell declares he ain’t playing “Pretty Polly” - nor a slew of other murder ballads - anymore.
I ain’t playing ‘Pretty Polly’ or ‘Rosalee McFall’/I ain’t playing ‘Knoxville Girl,’ no, none of them at all/no more tales of women killed by drunk and violent men, Powell and Giddens sing over a languid, acoustic melody.
Powell understands some of these songs are folk standards - the foundation of Americana. And he’s seen audience members both thank him and walk out when he plays this song, which appears on the forthcoming When I Wait For You, out Sept. 4.
“I would rather offend someone who feels threatened by my take on this aspect of tradition than further traumatize someone who has been the victim of violence,” Powell said in a statement.
“ ... I performed and recorded the worst of these songs for a very long time. I own that. I'm done now.”
People can agree or disagree with this choice from a musical standpoint. But anyone who enjoys American roots music would have a hard time denying “I Ain’t Playing Pretty Polly” is a masterful composition and performance - not to mention a gutsy, righteous declaration.
