Shooting Lessons- Steve “Dirty Steve” Stephens x Reader
(Or shooting lessons that turn into something else ✨very quickly✨)
I am not a writer, and I know I’m not a very good one either. But there’s a significant lack of Young Guns content and as Thanos said, “Fine, I’ll do it myself.”
So here you go.

Tunstall’s Ranch
I sat by the small fire that the boys had made before their ride into town for supplies, turning the gun I had absconded earlier that day in my hands. It felt heavy in my palms, like it didn’t fit; didn’t belong to me. But I had found it fair and square, abandoned on the dusty ground in the middle of the street, no owner to claim it. It looked like a regular six-shooter revolver, maybe a Smith and Wesson. Could even be a 38 special…
A snore broke my thoughts, and my attention was turned to the young man leaned up against a nearby tree. Steve smacked his lips, hat brim over his eyes as he slept. Richard had told him to help me watch the ranch for any unwanted guests, but even direct orders couldn’t break that man’s sleep schedule. I stood up and marched over, leaning down and nudging his shoulder lightly, “Steve…c’mon get up, I can’t watch this place alone.”
He snorted before shifting and pushing his hat brim up with his thumb, “Huh..? Oh hey, darlin’…” he yawned as he sat up, rubbing a gloved hand over his scruffy face. He spat tobacco juice onto the ground before getting to his feet with a grunt. “Why’d ya wake me up? Somethin’ wrong?”
“Nothin’ wrong, Steve, just wanted you to stay awake with me.” I replied, giving the spinning chamber of the gun a few experimental clicks. I felt his gaze on me and looked up. Sure enough he was staring curiously at my new gun.
“When did you buy that?”
“I didn’t buy it. I found it.”
“Where the hell did you find a gun?” His eyebrows furrowed, nose wrinkled with a doubtful grimace. “You didn’t steal it off somebody…? Tunstall don’t like us stealin’ stuff…”
“Relax, it was on the ground in town and nobody had made an effort to get it.” I reassured him. “Besides, I was hoping you could teach me how to use it.”
Steve nearly choked on his spit. “Wha- me?” He asked, clearly shocked. “What ‘bout havin’ Billy teach ya? Or that Navajo Chavez?”
I smiled softly and nodded towards him, “I could have them do it, but I’d rather it be you.” I stepped closer to him, lowering my voice as if someone would hear, “Don’t tell the others, but you’re my favorite.”
Steve’s cheeks darkened quickly, and he pulled his brim over his face as he looked at his feet.
“Aw….shucks…” He murmured, chewing on the wad of tobacco in his mouth thoughtfully. “Yeah, I can teach ya.”
I grinned and looked at the revolver in my hands with excitement. I couldn’t wait to actually learn to shoot, even better to be close to Steve…it caused a swarm of butterflies to break loose in my stomach. Billy would give me hell for days if he found out I chose Steve’s help with my gun simply because I liked him. Not that I didn’t like the other Regulators, they were my only family.
But over the months I’d been on Mister Tunstall’s ranch, the more I felt the dynamic between Steve and I shift. It got to a point where I just let it happen, my head swimming with thoughts and dreams. The sound of hooves thundering on the ground and hollering snapped me back to reality. The boys were back.

“Now, ya gotta loosen yer stance…not too loose, now…yeah like that…like that.” Steve murmured as he held my hips, standing behind me as he guided me to be more in sight of the target on a nearby hay bail.
The smell of whiskey and tobacco swirled around my nose, his warm breath on my neck as he hovered behind me, hunched down to see what I could see. I let out a breath and gingerly pulled the trigger.
BANG! A shot rang out, echoing through the open land before burying into the hay bail near the outer ring of the bullseye.
“Alright…alright…” He hummed. “Hit it pretty good.”
“You think so?” I asked, looking up to him to be greeted with the warm, bright sun casting light and shadow on his face as he looked down at me. It stopped my breath and left my stomach in knots.
“Mhm.” He spat tobacco juice onto the ground. “Good job, darlin’.”
That simple praise went straight to my head, among other places, and I felt my face grow hot. Without much thought in my mind at the moment, I suddenly pulled him closer to me. I ignored the surprise in his wide, brown orbs.
I pressed a little kiss to his parted lips, tasting whisky and tobacco on his mouth. He didn’t struggle, wrapping his arms around my waist and pulling me closer.
“Sorry-“ I started as I pulled away, only for him to yank me back, our chests flush. He didn’t say a word before kissing me again, deeper this time. I closed my eyes, melting around him as we backed up against a nearby tree. In that moment I didn’t care about it being broad daylight nor the fact that the boys would be back soon enough, my only thoughts were on him. I broke the kiss, breath puffing in quick succession.
“If you take that crap outta your mouth, I’ll kiss you proper~”
I had never seen him spit his tobacco out so fast. He grabbed his nearby canteen and rinsed his mouth out before closing the distance to me again, pulling me in against him. His eyes were playful, mixed with something deep and raw. He started the kiss and I reciprocated, kissing him deeply and properly, our tongues brushing as we enjoyed each other. I groaned softly, “what if the boys see?”
“They can whine about it till they’re blue…” he grumbled against my lips. I moaned softly, melting back into him. I knocked his hat off, running my fingers through his hair before tugging gently as I bit at his lip. A satisfying groan escaped his throat, and his hands suddenly gripped my hips tight enough to bruise. He pressed his hips against mine, a level of desperation in his movements.
“I don’t think….” He whipped around, pushing me against the tree, breath hot and heavy.
“Please…” He grunted.
I gave in, pulling myself against him as he gripped my lower back and started to rock his hips-
“Now what on God’s green Earth is going on here?!” Richard squawked. We both froze, realizing that at some point the boys had returned. All of them watching us. Both Doc and Richard shared looks of tiredness, though it seemed they were both expecting for something like this to happen. Billy and Charlie shared something under their breaths that sent them into a fit of chuckling and earned them a sharp look from Richard. Chavez just simply shook his head, smirking softly as he headed off to get cleaned up, muttering something in Spanish that I couldn’t catch. Steve and I broke apart, trying to make ourselves presentable as if we hadn’t just been caught almost with our pants off. We were never hearing the end of it, that was for sure. But even after dinner and sitting near the fire reading the newspaper with Mister Tunstall, we both knew that everything would be okay.
“Steve and his partner sittin’ in a tree-“
“Shut it Billy!”
