Not cooking but a great FYI if y'all are struggling with straws when it comes to environmental anxiety, cost, taste and texture, and easy disposal: A fantastic cheap alternative that you might not know about is wheat stalk straws!
I get them relatively cheaply at my local superstore. For this specific brand (presidents choice) even the box and plastic cover are recyclable.
Using straws as a disabled person has helped immensely in keeping me hydrated without too much concern for my motor function levels of the day (Straws were actually made with the intent for these very purposes!)
But if you're like me and feel guilty about using plastic, are frustrated about using the expensive ones that need washing and get gunky, and are annoyed with the melting and bad tasting paper straws, this has proven to be a great alternative!
The only complaint I would have is since it's a wheat stalk, it can split open in places if it's crushed, but I feel the same can go for plastic.
