I don't think this is being widely covered by national news, but Western Alaska has been devastated by Typhoon Halong. Thousands of people are out of their homes, the coastal Yup'ik villages of Kwigillingok and Kipnuk had 6.6 feet of water above normal. Dozens of people were rescued swimming in icy waters, houses have been ripped off their foundations, one woman is dead, three people are still missing, and most people are sheltering in the community schools. This is a roadless, remote area where it's difficult to get supplies and help in, heading into winter. Consider giving towards the Native-coordinated disaster response sending food and other supplies if you can.

We are facing a catastrophic disaster. I know I know a lot is going on, my heart is so heavy for Sudan and El Fashir, also for Palestine (Gaza and the West Bank), Congo and too many other places. The islands in the tropics are largely ignored during hurricane season though and we are on the brutal receiving end of climate change when we barely contribute to it.

If you've ever wondered why people in Hawai'i hate tourists, try to wrap your mind around the fact that there are CURRENTLY, RIGHT NOW, tourists sipping martinis and looking at fish within swimming range of the fresh corpses of local people who couldn't escape the overnight destruction of their entire town.
Try to comprehend that there are fully functional, high capacity boats passing through the waters in front of an area full of survivors who are stranded and in need of supplies, refusing to help. They are hosting snorkeling tours.
Really think about, try your best to actually picture over two thousand people unhoused and in need of shelter, with nothing but the clothes on their backs and nothing to return to. Understand that the island, stolen land, is littered with hotels full of air conditioned of rooms with beds and showers and toilets, each fully equipped to host hundreds of families for weeks, turning these people away because they're booked up with tourists who refuse to leave.
And understand that these tourists were offered free transport to return home or be hosted on other islands. Free. Courtesy of local tax dollars. 4,000 wealthy tourists were offered free flights shelter on Oahu and begged to leave the island, BEFORE the survivors were given shelter.
And enough still insisted on remaining and carrying out their vacations that people are left without shelter and resources while they enjoy "their stay in paradise".
[Edit]: This current situation, and this type of tourist behavior is horrifying beyond words. In other circumstances, the tourism situation is much more complicated, and I need to ask that people do not add on to this post unless they are local.
March 2026 Catastrophic Floods & Severe Weather in Hawaii 🛑⚠️

I don't know if much news has made it to the mainland, but Hawaii has been hit by two large storms one after the other, that have dumped massive amounts of rain and left many areas with catastrophic floods. Houses have been ripped up and floated away, wastewater systems overwhelmed, power outages, falling rocks and trees, and the Wahiawa Dam has been hovering near max capacity, putting downstream rural towns (Waialua and Haleiwa on the north shore of Oahu) on mandatory evacuation alert.

The Lahui Foundation are boots-on-the-ground working at evac shelters right now. They're asking for physical items but they're accepting monetary donations too.
Hawaii Community Foundation is a legit organization that has given significant donations to assist in the recovery from the 2023 Maui fires. Their Stronger Hawaii Fund has been activated to respond to the recent flooding.
The Hawaii Food Bank serves Oahu and Kauai, in partnership with the Maui Food Bank and The Food Basket, which serves Hawaii Island (the Big Island). These guys are also doing emergency food distributions right now.
Aloha United Way is another reputable non-profit organization that has been helping out during this severe weather and was providing lots of recovery efforts during and after the Maui fires.
Hawaii Farmers Union is another boots-on-the-ground nonprofit that's assisting in flood recovery. Waialua and Haleiwa are just two of multiple rural agricultural towns facing significant farm damage.
The situation is still evolving- there may be more rain incoming, and evacuation/clean-up efforts are still underway. I'll continue to update this post if need be, but these organizations will remain great ones to donate to and keep an eye on in the coming days. many regions in Ontario and the Northwest Territories have been evacuated or given serious health warnings due to air quality or fire proximity. it is causing extreme temperature issues and a horrible air quality problem, in addition to the literal destruction caused by the fires
the air has looked filtered orange like an old western movie for the last several afternoons, and despite the fact that we are also in a heat warning (partially due to the nearby fires) we've had to keep the windows closed. i was outside just briefly yesterday and i could see ash falling on my phone screen. everything looks and smells smoky, and it's been a very painful few days as someone in the "vulnerable" group
my district has been advised to prepare emergency kits and stay indoors as much as possible (AQHI is considered hazardous quality here today)... i don't ever recall being given advice to prepare emergency kits in my district, not even during other bad seasons that have hit in recent years. the city here is actually usually well-known for taking in evacuees from other places during wildfire season, due to our proximity to many smaller townships and the Indigenous Reservations in Northern Ontario. i have friends whose family camps have burned down or come close, and a nearby summer camp that is well-known for providing for underprivileged children has had to have an emergency evacuation due to nearby fires and extreme heat
these disasters are disproportionately devastating to the disabled, children and elders, and those of low socioeconomic status, which in turn makes them also disproportionately affect POC and my Indigenous siblings and cousins

The 25 Democratic attorneys general say administration imposed ‘unlawful’ conditions on federal disaster grants

A group of 25 Democratic attorneys general led by California’s Rob Bonta are taking the Trump administration to court for imposing “unlawful” conditions on federal grants for disaster preparedness and response.
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and Federal Emergency Management Agency (Fema) have been placing stipulations on federal grants that amount to a “campaign of coercion” designed to force states to adopt the White House’s preferred voting and immigration policies says the lawsuit, filed in federal court in Rhode Island on Thursday.
Those requirements, which have been imposed on more than $740m in combined funding for disaster preparedness and counter-terrorism, include mandating states employ a federal system to verify the citizenship of all voters and conduct post-election audits.
The lawsuit also targets agencies’ attempt to withhold funds to states who do not agree to assist Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in conducting raids and deportations – a mandate that a federal court struck down last year. And it calls out a new condition giving Fema the ability to cancel state grants if they are found to be out of alignment with the agency’s priorities.
“President Trump has little support for both his mass deportation agenda and his baseless claims of election fraud, so instead, he’s trying to bully state and local governments into adopting his preferred policies in exchange for much-needed funding,” Bonta said in a statement.

If you’ve been following the news in the US, you know that tornadoes ripped through the midwest and southeast, including my hometown of St. Louis, Missouri. The tornado in St. Louis left tens of thousands without power, ripped roofs off of buildings, uprooted trees, and killed at least five. Many people had little to no warning, as the storm intensified and moved quickly, and many have reported that sirens did not go off (alerts were sent to phones, however). The value in property damage is in the billions. St. Louis will need help.
The tornado in St. Louis mainly ripped through north city, which is historically Black, low income, and largely neglected by the city itself. Here’s some information and links to help and donate to the people of north city!
