NU-DISCO: LIVE GROOVE
Disco is a genre that doesn’t seem to get much love by the popular audiences, and when disco music began to appear in the 70’s many weren’t too happy about it either. It sort of parallels the way rap music is looked at by rock lovers, who saw the popularity of rock music decline as rap music slowly emerged from the roots of late funk. When Disco music came around, there was a huge divide among those who like their classic rock music and those who saw the trend of dance music becoming a real thing. Today, elements of disco, like funk, are injected into many tunes and most of us are unaware of where they come from. One of the main elements of disco music is not the types of instruments used or the drums themselves, but it is actually based on the rhythm. This of “Smooth Criminal” by Michael Jackson, and how the one-two beat sort of lands without too much emphasis on the clap. This is because the claps tend to be toned down so that they don’t take too much of the focus. The bass notes are also muted a bit to take the high frequencies out of each note. http://www.attackmagazine.com/technique/beat-dissected/nu-disco-live-groove/
