when you 1x1 on discord, do you create a new server with the person or just privately im each other with para's and stuff ? [i'm new so just trying to get the hang of it. help pls!!]
omg friend of course !! welcome to the wonderful accessible world of discord rping / 1x1ing ! i usually make a server and invite the other mun in , because that's the easiest way to keep organised and track threads . i used to be rlly bad at making them and keeping them organised , but now i've gotten into a groove and found what works for me !
i'll explain more below on how i do it , but if you don't want to get overwhelmed - you can use @ctrlsugar's ( hope its ok i tagged u ! ) INCREDIBLE 1x1 server template right here . it is a lifesaver and does 95% of the work for you .
i do think everyone likes to set up and organise servers differently . for me , the main thing that helps me is creating categories and channels in the server . for example , see below screenshot . the category is named ooc . the channels within it are things like general ooc chat , plots we want in the future , one easy place to view / remember each others triggers , smut / kink stuff , future fcs we'd want to play . this is just how i do it . you can style it differently of course if you want .
i also have ' mr robot ' channel which is basically just reserved for tupperbox . i would strongly suggest using tupperbox because it's a phenomenal bot for discord and rping . here is a great explanation on what tupperbox is by the discord rp champion @dayslily ( hope its ok i tagged ).
to invite tupperbox into your server , it's super easy . literally just go here and click ' invite ' . it'll tell you to pick a server and jump on in ! some people know and use all the commands , but i'm still a novice there . i just set it all up via tupperbox.app . but you can do a deep dive of the many commands and things u can get tupperbox to automate for u !
i don't use any other bots personally , bc i'm not super well versed in them . but i know there's sooo many out there that can keep you organised and keep things fresh and fun . one of my friends had a bot set up in our discord that would give us daily q's to answer about our ocs ( shoutout @mintings ) , which was really fun . you can find out more about potential bots from again , very helpful nic aka dayslily over here .
for me , categories and channels is how i sort everything . if you see below screenshot , you can see how i've created a category for a specific ship , then channels for everything correlating to that ship .
i also use a specific channel type for my threads specifically , which is called a forum . i personally really like this because it helps keep the server clean and you don't have to scroll and scroll through hundreds of channels in the sidebar . in a forum channel type , you can easily list all of your upcoming threads or thread ideas . you can also use the search function easily , and after a set amount of days ( i set mine to 4 ) of inactivity on that thread , it'll ' hide itself ' ( you can access it again later by clicking on the main forum ) .
the only down side about threads is that not everyone in the server gets notified about them when you post or start a new one ( i believe , but could be wrong ) , so you have to tag them each time .
but it's a cute way to hide / show and organise things . i just like it personally , but u don't have to use it ! before forums , i used to just do threads as normal text channels . but i write a lot w my partners and this caused some bloat in our servers , hence why i moved to forums instead .
