Luxurious Resort Lifestyle at Discovery Shores Boracay
After spending my first two nights in Boracay roaming the party hot spots and hopping around the many restaurants and establishments along D’Mall and White Beach, it was now time for me to experience a more private and secluded beach resort vacation. I have always wanted to stay in this luxurious resort hotel that I often see in lifestyle shows and travel magazines, and now, after getting discounted vouchers at last year’s PTAA Travel Tour Expo, I will finally get a chance to experience this magical destination for myself.
Discovery Shores Boracay is located near the end of White Beach Station 1, the more private and upscale side of Boracay. The 87-room luxury hotel is consistently listed in Travel + Leisure’s World’s Best Hotels and is a 2015 winner at the World Luxury Hotel Awards. Their private shuttle picked me up at my previous hotel, The Tides Boracay, with my luggage and dropped me off at the hotel where I was led to the front desk lobby.
The resort is very bright and spacious, a far cry from the tight and crowded areas in Station 2 and D’Mall. Checking in was quite easy as they already knew of my arrival and my keys were just handed to me at the lobby.
Discovery Shores has a very wide and beautiful beach front where you can have a relaxing swim away from the many prying eyes of the Boracay crowd. It was a bit too hot for me so I will just do my swimming later.
The hotel is one of the island’s prestigious resorts and a favorite of the most discriminating local and international travelers. All luxurious guestrooms are equipped only with the finest amenities within its heralded architecture. I was amazed with how different it felt here inside the resort compared to the rest of Boracay Island.
I stayed in the Junior Suite (P15,860/night) on the second floor which has 45 square meters of comfortable space and is furnished with a king size bed. The room is very bright as it has a window facing the pool area and there is plenty of space to move about. The room comes with a 32-inch LCD TV and free WIFI Access. There is also a DVD player and component system if you want to watch movies. A minibar plus coffee and tea making facilities are also included.
The bathroom feature 100% cotton oversized towels and a full glass wall overlooking a scenic rock garden. I was also delighted to see complimentary cookies and pandan water on the table so I do not have to worry about snacks and drinks.
The room is just so cozy and homey and I only wish that my room at home was as nice as this.
What sets Discovery Shores apart from other hotels is its focus on service and enhancing the guest experience. I was given a complimentary 15-minute foot wash inside my own suite upon my arrival and it was so soothing for my tired and aching feet. These little extra bonuses are what guests remember the most during their stay which makes them feel special and truly pampered.
Discovery Shores also offers 24-hour room service and since I was still feeling lazy that afternoon, I ordered the Beef Ribs Adobo (P400+) and it was sent to my room. The beef ribs were delicious. The hotel also offers friendly concierge service for anything you need as well as complimentary shuttle services to other parts of White Beach if you want to party or have dinner outside.
But with views as magical as this, why would I want to go out anymore? I will be spending the next two days at Discovery Shores and everything I need and want is already here.
Their swimming pool is located just below and this includes a shallow kiddie level, a jacuzzi, a poolside bar, and butlers offering complimentary treats which make it a perfect hangout spot. Kids are given inflatable toys and guests are provided drinks and towels once they step inside the pool area. Popcorn and canapés were even passed around and one butler even sprayed Evian water on my face so that I can cool off. Everyone is treated like royalty here at Discovery Shores.
Time for me to have a swim! Honestly, I prefer to swim inside a pool rather than at the beach, so this is really the perfect spot for me to relax and enjoy my Boracay vacation.
Other amenities at Discovery Shores include a fitness center where I had a short workout, a recreation room with a billiards table and videoke system, a library and the Sandbox children’s room for the kids.
I was also surprised to see these complimentary Cassava Cake turndown snacks waiting for me inside my suite when I returned. Everything is so complete and luxurious here and I don’t think I want to leave this place ever.
Night swimming is also a colorful experience and you will never run out of fun activities to do with friends and family.
I was excited for my dinner that night at Discovery Shores Boracay’s most popular dining destination, the Indigo Restaurant. The restaurant was featured twice in the Philippine Tatler’s Best Restaurants List and shortlisted for the 2010/2011 MIELE Guide to Asia’s Best Restaurants. Indigo serves a highly seasonal menu of creative coastal cuisine, using only the finest ingredients available from the bounties of land and sea.
I ordered the Frozen Strawberry Lychee Iced Tea (P180) which is a refreshing and fruity beverage. Complimentary bread is given as appetizers and an amuse bouche including Tuna Cerviche with Balsamic Vinegar was also served to whet my appetite even further.
I love seafood so I had the Mussels, Shrimp & Crab Combo (P2195) which had all the fresh seafood items I wanted. These are served in a sizzling hot cast iron skillet with garlic parsley butter. Yes, you can probably get these much cheaper at D’Talipapa, but you can’t match the elegant and romantic private beachside setting here at the Indigo Restaurant.
I also got this cute little teddy bear as a souvenir together with a set of yummy macarons for my dessert. They really go the extra mile and take care of their guests here at Discovery Shores.
The next morning, buffet breakfast was served at the Sands Restaurant, the all day dining cafe of Discovery Shores with spectacular views of the ocean. Here, you can enjoy a sumptuous breakfast by the sea, linger over a late a la carte lunch, or feast on one of their famous themed buffet dinners.
Their breakfast menu is quite bountiful with plenty of choices including bacon, sausages, eggs benedict, bangus, sweet and sour fish fillet, and a variety of juices, milk and coffee. They even have Yakult, and I think I got four bottles for myself.
That afternoon, I headed to one of the more secluded beaches in Boracay on the other side of the island, Puka Beach, which got its name from the white puka shells that you can find all around the sand. The beach is closer to Discovery Shores in Station 1 and I just hailed a tricycle to take me here for a flat fee of P50.
The waters here at Puka Beach actually seem clearer and more beautiful than at the more populated and commercialized White Beach. If you want to see Boracay like it was one or two decades ago, then this side is where you should hang out.
There are only a few places where I can get away with a pose like this and Boracay is definitely one of those spots. I spent my last whole day in Boracay admiring the ocean and nature itself. It is so relaxing to just lounge at the beach and then come back and be pampered at your luxury resort hotel.
Unfortunately, every vacation has to end so I had to say goodbye to my home in Discovery Shores Boracay. The room package comes with private roundtrip boat and van transfers to and from Boracay Airport in Caticlan, so I had the privilege of riding in the hotel’s own speedboat heading back to Caticlan. You can also enjoy relaxing at their private VIP dock in Caticlan upon your arrival at the island while waiting for your van transfers.
My VIP privileges even extend up to the Caticlan Airport where Discovery Shores has a private VIP lounge for its guests while waiting for your flight to depart. It has its own television set and it surely beats having to wait at the crampy seats outside. Boracay is always full of energy and excitement and I just can’t wait to go back here this summer. The PTAA Travel Tour Expo is happening again next month, so I might just start planning my summer vacation to Boracay soon.
If you are looking for an exclusive and relaxing five-star vacation atop the cool mountain ridge of Tagaytay City, then there is no better place to do this than at the Discovery Country Suites. I have made several trips to Tagaytay and have tried different hotels and lodges there but the Discovery Country Suites has been the best one so far, offering a grand view of the Taal Lake and Taal Volcano right from its rooms and garden areas.
Discovery Country Suites can be found right along the main highway that you can reach from the Sta. Rosa exit of the South Luzon Expressway. Located at 300 Tagaytay-Calamba Road, it is just a kilometer or two away from the main Tagaytay Rotunda and is easily accessible from all points of Tagaytay City. This boutique hotel sits on the scenic Tagaytay ridge and is actually one of the best bed and breakfast hotels in the country. It is owned by the Discovery Leisure Group which also operates several other hotels and resorts in the country like the Discovery Suites in Ortigas and the multi-awarded Discovery Shores in Boracay.
There are only 7 suites in Discovery Country Suites so each guest is treated like a VIP right upon check-in. Each room actually has its own theme and design so make sure to choose your room and make reservations early since these rooms are always limited and in demand.
Restaurant Verbana is the first that will greet you once you enter the hotel. The place actually feels more like a vacation house with its cozy wooden interiors and a relaxing comfortable feel.
A fireplace sits by the restaurant to warm the nights when it gets too cold. The place is just so charming and it would be so great to have weekend getaways here with the family and loved ones.
I was booked at the Saint-Tropez suite which is located on the lobby level floor just close to the front desk.
The 37-square meter Saint-Tropez suite gets its inspiration from the sunny colors of the Mediterranean coastline. It has two big double beds which can fit from three to four guests. Since there are only seven suites, you do not have the option of choosing king sized or double sized beds for your room as each suite is designed with its own theme and capacity.
Yellow and blue colors bring about a cheerful and lively ambiance reminiscent of the atmosphere along the French Riviera. The room has big wide spaces to roam about freely with couches and tables scattered about. An LCD television with a DVD player is available for the guests.
Coffee and tea-making facilities are provided as well as a welcome platter of fruits (not pictured). You also have an iPod dock, a personal refrigerator and a safety deposit box for your own use.
The bathroom is just as luxurious with its all-glass rain shower and exquisite Acca Kappa toiletries from Italy.
While I was not able to see all of the other rooms at Discovery Country Suites because they were occupied, you can view them individually at their Official Website. Each room offers its own unique ambiance and location, with a few rooms offering a direct view of Taal Volcano. Some suites are more suited for couples while others are better for families, so choose your room properly, or better yet, try them all!
I took a leisurely walk around the hotel to see all of its other public areas. They have this DVD rack where you can pick movies you can watch inside your suite for that romantic movie night.
Here is another fireplace down here at the garden level which has access to the garden and outdoor jacuzzi at the back of the hotel.
There are also several rooms at this level which opens up to the refreshing garden. Doesn’t it look so cozy and inviting?
The Ceylon Suite is actually one of the most popular rooms at Discovery Country Suites because it has direct access from the road as well as to the jacuzzi and garden. This 33-square meter Suite is more commonly booked by couples who want more privacy and it comes with a King-sized bed and a day bed.
The pathway from the Ceylon Suite leads directly to the outdoor jacuzzi.
The jacuzzi may not be as big as other swimming pools but with this scenery facing you, it doesn’t really matter. Since there are only a few guests at this bed and breakfast, you won’t be bumping into them quite often and you really feel like this is your own private vacation home away from the hustle and bustle of the city.
Disovery Country Suites also has a treat for all its guests with its complimentary Wine and Cheese selection offered at sundown. Here you can try their assortment of cheeses with a glass of wine, perfect to set the mood for that romantic dinner date or a night out in Tagaytay city.
But if you prefer to just stay inside Discovery Country Suites for the entire evening, and I wouldn’t blame you, then you can have dinner at Restaurant Verbana which is their multi-awarded restaurant serving contemporary fusion cuisine with ingredients from farm-fresh country food.
Restaurant Verbana offers breakfast, lunch and dinner services so you will never have to leave the hotel once you step inside.
When I got back to my room, I had another surprise waiting for me, Milk and Cookies! These are also given to all the guests of the hotel and it is a fitting bedtime treat that I truly appreciated. Their warm Vanilla milk is also one of the best tasting drinks I have ever had! I will definitely be off to a deep slumber with everything that Discovery Country Suites has provided.
The next morning, a delightful breakfast setup was prepared at Restaurant Verbana to greet all the guests a good morning.
You can get all the breads, pastries, cereals, fruits and beverages that you want which are all part of the breakfast. Then you can order one main breakfast dish from their menu which will be cooked especially for you.
Of course, I ordered the meatiest dish that I could find and that was the Breakfast Steak and Eggs! The steak was so juicy and tender with the two sunny side eggs providing a perfect backdrop for this hearty breakfast. This will definitely energize you for your adventures in Tagaytay throughout the day. So whenever you have plans of traveling to Tagaytay, check out Discovery Country Suites and you might just decide to extend your stay.
