Twas the weekend before Discworld Con and all through the land: people were desperately trying on costumes and hoping they fit... Pleased to report i can still squeeze into Mal's Scots Guards jacket. The Cheesemonger shall be in attendance.
Some some of you may not be aware that Discworld Cons are totally a thing and have been for years! And there’s quite a few of them! Below you’ll find a list, already compiled for you. (Not by me)
The International DWCon These biennial events are the largest Discworld gatherings, and are based in the UK. The next one will be held on the 26th-29th August 2016 at Chesford Grange Hotel, near Warwick.
Scheibenwelt Convention The German Discworld Convention 10th-13th September 2015 at Burg Ludwigstein, Witzenhausen, Germany.
Nullus Anxietas VI The Australian Discworld Convention The next one will be on the 4th-6th August 2017 in Adelaide.
Cabbagecon The Dutch Discworld Convention. The most recent one took place on 27th-28th June 2015 at the Tulip Inn Hotel Val Monte, Berg en Dal, Netherlands.
NADWCon The North American Discworld Convention Sadly the NADWCon team are currently unable to hold a full-size convention, but there will be a 'mini-NADWCon' at Worldcon 2015.
Polish Conventions These happen twice a year in Nawojowa Góra, near Kraków. The previous one was on the 10th-12th April 2015.
Wincanton Events These events are organised in association with the Discworld Emporium, and usually happen twice a year (Spring Fling and Hogswatch), in the town of Wincanton, UK. More information can be found here.
It’s important to check back on these sites if one is near you or...happens to be the only one in your country, because many advertise fan groups/clubs for your state, country or provance. As well as other discworld themed events that are happening around the place. Many also have facebooks as well.
For example there’s one in Auckland NZ trying to organise a play. (x)
Even if you don’t see yours listed here, please note that these are almost all affiliated with each other, you may find others in your area. Or perhaps wish to start your own. It’s a risky business, but I’ve been there and helped out at mini cons and they are still worth it no matter the size!
I am back from Discworld Con! And this is our haul - a lot of it was free or very cheap, thank the gods... The signed ones were mine already. Now to figure out where I'm going to put all of this!
I have a bunch more photos to put up that I will do once I have wrangled the camera/stalked the web for photographers who put up pics of us.
The whole event was really awesome and thanks to those who came to our juggling workshop. There were lots of lovely people - I ran into artist extraordinaire Alda Rana! Now to save up again for Hogswatch...
Having a mild panic because I thought I had ages to figure out if I could go to the Discworld Convention (Manchester 2014) but now they're down to the last 98 tickets. Eek! Booking things so far in advance really worries me, because I often end up being too ill to go or realising there's no transport or I can't afford it etc. etc... And at the moment I have friends who live in Manchester that I could possibly stay with, but they might well have moved by next year. Not to mention that I haven't even asked Ed about it yet!
Only the plus side, you can just buy "supporting" memberships, which means you can pay £25 each now and then upgrade to a full attending membership when you know you can go. I'll probably do that if I can persuade Ed...
The amazing Martin Pearson explaining the Discworld at @naiv. With perhaps a little help from Eric Idle...
Discworld Con
Oh, I had the best time. Let me explain. No, there is too much. Let me sum up. Over the course of 4 days I learnt about all about swords (including the allowing of handling of edged weaponry), all about knots (I can tie a bowline!) and I learnt all about Cripple Mr Onion (all your monies is belong to us!). I heckled Just a Minute, QI, and anything else I could get my hands on. I saw a Golem moonwalk, a dwarf rap about how we all loved big beards and we couldn't lie, and Adora Belle Dearheart sing "These Boots Are Made For Walking". I danced Scottish dances with the Nac Mac Feegle, a polka with a woman in a red wig and Tonker played air guitar on an axe to Bohemian Rhapsody (and pretty much anything else played that night). I discovered Werewolf for the first time and became madly addicted. I released the 'Happy Raptor Noise' at full volume in Sator Square and then swiftly bought the glee inspiring Cheesemongers badge for my bag of badges. I am torn over the Postal Service courier bag, and I might - just might. When I get paid. I didn't sleep enough, didn't eat enough, but probably drank enough, considering. I definitely danced too much. Oh, and Davina admired (profusely) my dress for the convention dinner. I didn't/don't want to come back to Roundworld. Roundworld sucks (re-set the counter!) Quack. ETA: Today has been weird. I miss it. Every time I close my eyes I can be back walking the corridors of the Hilton, but every-time I open them, boring old Roundworld impinges again. It feels funny not to be wearing my badge, I keep looking down and panicking that I've lost it. Time for unpacking/washing/bread making. Let the prosaic march of life go on...
