Have you considered the reason more blind, d/Deaf, and DeafBlind individuals are participating in fandom spaces because they aren’t accessible?? Hmm?

If you assume that someone 100% cannot see your post when describing it, it will be accessible to those with residual vision.

If you assume that someone with profound hearing loss cannot hear your post when transcribing it, it will be accessible to those with residual hearing.

If you say “I’ll make things accessible when a disabled person wants to interact with this part of the community” you actively discourage those people from interacting in the first place. I don’t want to barge in and make myself comfortable when I wasn’t welcome in the first place.

short answer: I go thrifting a lot

long answer (because I've decided I love you and you deserve the details): thrifting-and vintage thrifting especially- is a science. large thrift chains can be great but are more likely to be oversaturated with shitty fast fashion that someone threw out after the trend past and is gonna fall apart if you sneeze in it's general direction... which doesn't mean you won't find anything you just have to be more careful.

smaller private thrift store (look for words like 'vintage' and 'boutique') are my favorites. these stores are more likely to be more carefully curated by the owner, meaning the sifting has already been done for you! that's not to say there won't be any ff- I can still remember a time I was at one of my favorite little boutiques and had a genuinely visceral reaction to a shien tag.

another one of my favorites, if you can find them in your area, are flea markets. there's one that pops up at the mall where I live once a month and it's absolutely fantastic. I've gotten quite a lot of my favorite pieces there. these are great because they're full of variety and are personally curated.

there are also online options such as Depop and Facebook Marketplace these and great for when you can'tor jusy dont feel like) leaving the house for whatever reason. although they have the usual thrifting drawbacks along with those typical of online shopping.
