Disrupted Cutout Video

With the help of my friends, I created a short video centred around the disruption of the Minecraft cutout figure.

I wanted to capture how I felt in my preteen years unhealthily using multiplayer online videogames, especially Minecraft and the people I met through it as an escapism to the trauma/disruptions happening to me. The darker scenes symbolised my realisations, leaving that problem behind, and finally getting my ‘revenge’ but through a comical way by incorporating such a cartoonish character.

My song choice felt fitting, being Just by Radiohead, a song I find myself listening to when I get mad or upset.

Finished eye piece. Gouache eye diagram over chalk pastels. I wanted to highlight the reality of an eye, usually when we think of an eye we picture an eye on a human, but in reality it's much more anatomical and slightly unnerving. A headache isnt visible, just like the whole eye. The disruption in my life isn't visible, just like the the eye. There's always something hidden.

I also wanted to give the idea of the whole eye being exposed to air. The eyelid exists to protect the eye from debris and dryness, but a headache behind the eyes to me feels so dry and like the eyelid isn't even there. That's what I wanted to accentuate with the whole eye.

Disrupt Project- Adobe Animate workshop

Compilation of animations and video edits I made today during the adobe workshop with Paul.

We learnt how to motion tween, shape tween, animate frame by frame, how to apply different effects and key out a greenscreen.

Accordion book style made in publication. With help from my friends we drew starbursts and light effects on a big rectangular piece of paper, and then I divided the middle with a scalpel. Then I made sections out of my previous print and added them into the middle.

For this piece I wanted to focus on trying to articulate the physical feelings of pain through bright starbursts and typography. I also wanted to include an interpretation of how blurry eyesight works.

Digital piece made in photoshop. The point of this piece was to mix imagery that is headache-inducing to me personally, with effects that a headache causes.

For me a bad headache can cause disorientation and a fever, and in some cases poor decision making just to make the pain go away.

I included lyrics from the song "Well Done" by IDLES: "I'd rather cut my nose off, to spite my face" but obviously I changed them up to suit my topic. The song is very loud, angry and extreme, and the instruments remind me of how a headache feels. The lyrics themselves resonate with me, as sometimes in a pain-induced rage I think that the only way to get rid of this problem is to just rip my eyes out and be done with it.

The wires are an area that I will be exploring further, as a headache is an electrical connection in your brain.

Disrupt Project- Gathering sources

Teddies, toys and Lego, now I am looking towards my video games as primary sources to mix in.

I recorded a time-lapse of myself playing Tetris, photos of my 3DS gaming console and have also made a short, simple stop motion video of the device that I will be uploading after this.

I will be including these in my future works and I’m excited to bring these concepts to my next workshop.

Disrupted Cutout- 'Torturing' Aftermath

After enlisting my peers to destroy the cardboard cutout in any way they wanted and letting them take out their own destructive rage. I was left with the distorted remnants of the once whole figure, reflective of my anger and self-destruction towards my childhood and early teen self.

I wanted to repurpose/recycle the remains to create something new, just like how my own life carried on.

Attempting to patch up the figure in a way I found Frankenstein-like, a peer suggested I crucify the cutout which I straight away went to do, adding a slightly more 3D element to the piece. The symbolism with crucifixion and returning to life being on point to the theme of my piece.
