Putting aside Wylan's tumultuous and conflicted eight years of suffering prior to Mari finally coming home-
Violet was smart, but keeping her focused on study and schoolwork necessitated a sort of ... reward system. Which Wylan, lover of games, was all too keen to set up. The better grades she got and time spent studying, the more points, and gifts, etc.
Except, Vi, being the bud of her mother she is, is just... that clever once properly driven. So she started questioning and debating some of the tiers and investments it came to be that there were three revisions of the reward boxes that got slapped onto the fridge.
Long story short, that was how Violet got to go to a theme park for getting straight perfect marks instead of just getting a huge toyset she had been eyeing.
Played that man. But it's fine. Because he had a great time too.
