hii so sorry if this is odd but i thought it was interesting how you tagged that narcissus and echo poem as danko and eva. is it alright to ask about your interpretation of it? :o

hi!! thank you so much for the ask it's not odd at all.. i love answering stuff like this haha. apologies that this is more kind of like a freeform rant than anything, i just wrote it as kind of a stream of consciousness and it got. long!

so! personally i find their relationship echoes (bdm tshh) the myth of narcissus and the nymph quite a bit. dankovsky is so absorbed into his work and is blinded by his views mostly thru his own hubris; i think that at least in part his infatuation with the tower is a "reflecting" relationship of sorts, in that it, in his mind, can "hold" and preserve dead life indefinitely, even allow you to interact with it, and that's on some level what he's attempting to achieve with thanatica. he talks about it in a very cold way, like looking at pinned butterflies under glass, very scientific, which makes me think he sees it almost like an extension of his own work. a hall of mirrors of sorts maybe, or a camera obscura of what he’s working towards.

eva on the other hand develops a weird infatuation with him almost immediately; he's arrived in town for no more than a few hours and she asks him to stay at her home indefinitely. the stillwater was meant to be a guesthouse, sure, but it's definitely HER house too. she spends a lot of time thinking about daniil and his safety - even going so far as to want to run away from town with him, without any plan of where to go afterwards, in order to "save" him. i don’t think this is out of line for how she approaches any relationship, or that daniil is a special case, she’s just that passionate about things, but he is certainly the most recent and the example of her strong feelings that we see most clearly.

i don't attribute her self sacrifice in the cathedral to this line of thinking, because if you visit her on day 12 she explicitly says it's not about dankovsky, and in fact is not about or for anybody but herself - but i will say that daniil's presumption that it's about him or his business with maria certainly speaks to how absorbed he is in his own work and dealings, that he can't think of anything so crucial to her outside of any of this. the idea of echo having in some way lost her body kind of crops up here, but for daniil and eva this is a subverting of the myth since her infatuation started well before this.

i think for eva a lot of their relationship is founded on the idea that unconditional love can save someone - her quick infatuation may or may not be related to that but it's certainly what gets the ball rolling. i think she really buys into the idea that love can be this all powerful thing, if the right combination of words can be found, the right combination of meaningful moments and gestures can make a person “see the light”. with daniil there is definitely a lot To save - he's running himself ragged, perhaps even to the point of self destruction, to find out about an immortal man, then about a plague, then about the tower. always something for that guy to really get lost in, and eva sees that and thinks (hopes, prays) that if she can do it all the Right way she can take him away from himself, make him realise he should have more self-preservation. and i think that's not specific to daniil or anything - he's certainly the object of her affections, but i think it has far more to do with eva projecting out her own desire to be loved and saved through love than anything else. i don't know what she really wants salvation for but in the way she is so naturally loving and charming to so many people, i notice her times of insecurity more strongly. i also like to interpret her as a romantic poet-type of person, ala keats or byron, so the imagery is very much in line with that, too... as is the obsession with death and love! i think there's something to be said about eva's fixation on daniil as an extension of her obsession with death, too, but i haven't mused on it as much as i'd like.

the ties to echo and narcissus were already kind of there but it really formed together for me when i got fixated on róisín murphy's narcissus (please listen to it it's a banger). in it, echo is speaking to narcissus, pleading to him to just come off his predestined path into her arms, so that she might save him from a terrible fate. this almost immediately made me start thinking about daniil and eva lol

(in joking with a friend about their relationship, we independently circled back to the narcissus and echo idea several times and it really cemented it for me haha)

also, at the time i had either still been reading or had just finished house of leaves by mark z danielewski - there's about half a chapter that's dedicated to discussing narcissus and echo in relation to how love works, and discussing how for love to exist there needs to be distance and at the same time closed parameters, thus providing the "echo" needed for love, recognition of another. shouting out into a cave so deep you can't see any walls on any side will provide you with nothing, just fear and isolation, but crying out in a finite space, something with walls you can reach out and touch, you'll hear yourself reverberated, reconfirm the idea that you exist and said something at all. if i remember right the idea that god created man because He was lonely and needed an echo of Himself to prove He was really there and speaking, maybe that He was capable of love at all, is also present but it's been a little while and that book really fries my brain so i could be misremembering lol. i also really enjoy biblical references in context to eva because she’s surrounded by them - eve and the snake being the most obvious in this context, but the cathedral too, in a way, and here, this idea of echo as god’s messenger.

this isn't necessarily to say that this is all i think about their characters either but i hope that's at least partly evident LOL.. i'd hate for anyone to think i boil them down to just this or anything. their relationship in this lens is just very much something that fascinates me, haha. i hope this all makes sense! thank you so much for the question i really enjoyed answering it :~)
