Harry Kappen Celebrates Refugees in 'Distant Shore'Victor 'HCamrone' Onyejekwe Read the full article
Dutch-born multi-instrumentalist Harry Kappen confronts the water’s brutal indifference on his new single “Distant Shore”, the emotional anchor of his latest full-length album, “After the Crossing”. Kappen handles everything you hear on the track writing, performing, and producing. He’s a veteran music therapist who spent decades in youth care, and he clearly carries that observant, deeply empathetic gaze into his own atmospheric art-rock. His recent relocation to Mexico City was entirely voluntary and privileged, a comfort that seemingly gnawed at him when compared to the deadly, forced migrations of refugees fleeing war. A Terrestrial Void: Harry Kappen Gets Lost at Sea with "Distant Shore" Dutch-born multi-instrumentalist Harry Kappen confronts the water's brutal indifference on his new single "Distant Shore", the emotional anchor of his latest full-length album, "After the Crossing". [caption id="attachment_66082" align="alignnone" width="1242"] A Terrestrial Void: Harry Kappen Gets Lost at Sea with "Distant Shore"[/caption] The music responds directly to that bitter contrast. A steady, rolling rhythmic pulse drives the melody, mimicking the agonizing forward crawl of an overloaded boat. Haunting mellotrons bleed into the margins, explicitly nodding to the total isolation of David Bowie’s "Space Oddity". Yet Kappen's void is entirely terrestrial. The arrangement begins with a measured, reflective gait before aggressively escalating. Classic pop-rock structures suddenly crack open, revealing desperate, wailing solo sections that completely consume the backing rhythm in their attempt to find salvation. https://youtu.be/wtYdESzrp8w?si=I9-mGDVOktsjqbgH It is a harrowing, beautifully chaotic listen. hii so sorry if this is odd but i thought it was interesting how you tagged that narcissus and echo poem as danko and eva. is it alright to ask about your interpretation of it? :o
hi!! thank you so much for the ask it's not odd at all.. i love answering stuff like this haha. apologies that this is more kind of like a freeform rant than anything, i just wrote it as kind of a stream of consciousness and it got. long!
so! personally i find their relationship echoes (bdm tshh) the myth of narcissus and the nymph quite a bit. dankovsky is so absorbed into his work and is blinded by his views mostly thru his own hubris; i think that at least in part his infatuation with the tower is a "reflecting" relationship of sorts, in that it, in his mind, can "hold" and preserve dead life indefinitely, even allow you to interact with it, and that's on some level what he's attempting to achieve with thanatica. he talks about it in a very cold way, like looking at pinned butterflies under glass, very scientific, which makes me think he sees it almost like an extension of his own work. a hall of mirrors of sorts maybe, or a camera obscura of what he’s working towards.
eva on the other hand develops a weird infatuation with him almost immediately; he's arrived in town for no more than a few hours and she asks him to stay at her home indefinitely. the stillwater was meant to be a guesthouse, sure, but it's definitely HER house too. she spends a lot of time thinking about daniil and his safety - even going so far as to want to run away from town with him, without any plan of where to go afterwards, in order to "save" him. i don’t think this is out of line for how she approaches any relationship, or that daniil is a special case, she’s just that passionate about things, but he is certainly the most recent and the example of her strong feelings that we see most clearly.
