Monday, July 22: Distillator, "Algorithmic Citizenship"
“Algorithmic Citizenship” telegraphed its intentions from the jump, beginning with its title: the mix of vague esoteric philosophy and awkward English signaled that if this hadn’t already come out in 1988, then it was sure to be some kind of tech/thrash Voivod tribute, and that was exactly what Distillator delivered. The vocals weren’t quite so Snake, but the guitars and drums were straight Piggy and Away worship. Most of all, the track was a precise and well-executed homage to late ‘80s progressive thrash that both hit on the familiar beats while at the same time illustrating just what made the originals so special.
