✊🏿🎨#ArtIsAWeapon #DiversityInTheArts Reposted from @_fortheculture2020 Diversity in the Arts is long over due. To be an artist, you must have talent. However, talent is more than often not enough when you’re a Black Artist. Throughout history, talented Black artists didn’t always have a place to exhibit their work and many were excluded from the world of Academia. The white gaze has long determined whose stories are told. Outside of institutions that are specifically geared to Black artists and Black talent and the arenas that we have created ourselves, Black representation in the Arts have been awarded to a select few. In 2020, we are still fighting and demanding for our voices to heard and adequately showcased with in these publicly funded institutions. If these institutions do not get how essential Black representation, of all kinds, is ... then it is time to withdraw our public funds from these institutions. @guggenheim @metmuseum @themuseumofmodernart @gettymuseum @mfahouston @mfaboston @deyoungmuseum @artinstitutechi @nationalportraitgallery @nationalgallery @americanart _______________________ (Swipe ⬅️) images created by/reposted from @paintherlex & @rhearhea__ The following statements were created to draw attention to the systemic racism Black and brown individuals face within the arts sector. It is not enough to know and resonate with these statements within the comforts of your safe spaces and accountability circles. There must also be a call to action that fosters room for change. This begins with having real conversations. We have to start listening if change is really a collective priority- specifically in(but not limited to) Baltimore City where much of the injustice faced by Black and brown people is insidious and historically rooted in the fabric of the city. This list is by no means exhaustive. But it is a start to beginning REAL discussion. Feel free to repost and share within your networks, however I ask that you maintain the credit line.
