Frustrating game mechanic. I guess professors at Garreg Mach Monastery don't get paid overtime
It occurred to me that jeralts death scene might have actually made more sense in an earlier draft in terms of how and why. Firstly, consider that originally edelgard was conceived as more of an active rival then ship tease dictator in early 3H drafts. The notes on the subject even mention that edelgard in this stage of development/writing was suppose to interrupt and interfere with divine pulses to some extent [hence why she would need/have a crest of flames at all].
Now consider jeralts death scene. kronya waltzs behind him and stabs him, byleth resets time to intervene but is stopped from saving jeralt the second time around by thales. sothis mentions something about inevitable events that cannot be changed and we run right into jeralts death rattle without much more thought put to the subject. It works well enough for getting from point a to point b without tearing things apart but when ya consider it more deeply it... falls apart to an extent.
Why can’t byleth simply try again now that they know thales will try to intercept? why don’t they go a little further back to prevent jeralt from being in that position to begin with? did thales know byleth would or even could reset time or is this just a contingency coincide in case byleth caught on to kronyas aim? why is this inevitable and what are inevitable events that cannot be changed? doesn’t the very nature of three houses narrative being split in four paths prove that there are no inevitable events since their are four branching timelines? Their motivation for killing jeralt was always suspect to begin with even since his survival never really threatens the slitherers nor does his death really benefit them.
however, if edelgard had atleast been capable of manipulating divine pulse herself, then suddenly this scene would make so much more sense. Kronya stabs jeralt, byleth attempts to reset time but suddenly the flame emperor intervenes in the divine pulse. The flame emperor forces you out of the divine pulse, mentioning that they can’t quite let kronya die here and reveal all of their secrets yet. Thus jeralt dies because of the flame emperors intervention.
The motive? If we were talking about a more competitive and rival oriented edelgard then the motive is simply the removal of an obstacle on her path. but you could even fit this into how three houses is currently set up narratively speaking.
jeralts rejection of the flame emperor at remiere village. On non black eagles routes its one more obstacle removed from her path, someone who has refused to work with her and so has been removed. on the black eagles route? you could have it be a more devious two fold setup. jeralt would be dead, the guy who rejected her offer and more importantly seems to be the only other person byleth really listens to/follows [from edelgards perspective anyways], thus removing jeralt means that professor only has her to turn to as a confidant/superior. Secondly by having kronya do the dead and not the flame emperor herself, edelgard can direct byleths attention towards the slitherers instead as a target of retribution for jeralts death. edelgards notebook scribbles of senpai already rely on byleth mostly ignoring the flame emperors actions anyways so pining the blame on kronya and the slitherers helps make it so that edelgards flame emperor persona did nothing personally to aggrieve byleth.
This also makes the decision in throne of knowledge a bit more interesting in my opinion, atleast from the perspective of someone not already inclined to view edelgard with some skepticism.
Byleth every single time a student dies
*Cue divine pulse*
please tell me im not the only one :'D
Imagine: Byleth using Divine Pulse to reverse mundane mistakes, like spilling tea on their lesson plans. I’m sure Sothis would not be particularly thrilled with their creative use of a goddess-granted power.
Me: Divine Pulses are limited, and should be used sparingly.
Also Me: *uses divine pulse to screenshot the crit I just got, knowing I'm gonna land it again*
Big mood
