Halloween Countdown Day 5 –Mirrors and Fortune telling for Halloween.
Interesting fact: Did you know that if you look into a mirror at midnight on Halloween you can see the person you will be marrying?
Or so the poem goes:
On this night of which I sing, Jack o’ lantern is the King. His throne is made of Looking Glass. See your future as you pass.
The idea of the whole “Mirror as a way to see your future husband (or wife)” goes thus. At midnight on Halloween, grab a mirror and a candle, hold said candle up to the mirror and look into it to see their future spouse.
A more ritualistic version of the mirror game was for the young person (typically a girl) to put a spoonful of salt in their mouth. Then, without swallowing it, pick up a candle in one hand, a mirror in the other. Then, carefully, walk down the stairs to your basement at midnight, but you have to walk backwards, and look into the mirror as you do so. When you reach the bottom stair, your future husband or wife will appear beside you in the mirror.
Other mirror games have been said to tell your future, including combing your hair while eating an apple and looking into a mirror by candle light to see your spouse (again midnight). Cutting an apple into nine slices in a room where no one knows where you are and eating them off the point of the knife and when you get to the last you’re supposed to see your true love looking back at you, again at midnight. And one that has it where you need to look into a mirror with a candle at midnight while eating an apple.
Please be careful with these that you don’t set your house on fire.
