The Trotro business is one where division of labour can not be over emphasized. One person (in this case the driver) can not man a Trotro smoothly without a mate (conductor). Before a driver/ bus owner starts working in the trotro business they need to employ a mate. The mate’s role is equally as important as the driver. The mates are mostly in charge of the daily sales, cleaning of the bus, and ‘shadoing’ it. They are the contact point for every passenger who joins the bus, and or makes enquiries. They are literally the receptionists, accountants and cleaners in the trotros. . . .
