For one, mason's marks supposedly etched into the stonework lend an air of mystery to this structure as well as its builders. The volcanic landscape lends itself to the church with the black stones used in its construction. The detached belltower is festooned with carvings and decorations that are unusual attention given the prominence but austerity of the church right beside it. The camposanto down the road just outside the town is another ecclesiastical building not to be missed. Its octagonal base crowned with a grand cupola and lantern is massive and also shares the same black stone construction as the church in town.
