For those of y'all who didn't grow up in the Chicago Southland, here's the lowdown on Dixie Square. It was a shopping mall that opened in 1966, but closed soon after in 1979 due to a change in the area's demographics and an increase in crime to the area.
In 1979, the closed mall was set up like an actual mall to be used in The Blues Brothers car chase. The damage wasn't repaired and the building sat.
Due to shady development deals, a bad neighborhood, and no money, nothing happened.
The building just sat.
It was finally torn down after over 30 years of vacancy in 2012.
In those 30 years, the building was home to animals and the homeless, was vandalized by taggers, stripped of all valuable materials by scrappers, a victim of arsons, and in 1993, was the location of a rape and murder.
Dixie Square Mall is (was?) America's most infamous "dead mall". (I find it weird that people came to do urban explorations of it as like, a pilgrimage when I lived less than 10 mi away from it.)
It really is a fascinating story, that a building can just naturally decay for three decades. There are multiple urban exploration videos on YouTube if you care to see more for yourself.

This guy, I love this guy. I follow him on youtube and you all should too. Thanks to him I have gotten to see more of Dixie Square mall than I ever would (Considering where I live, states away and all).
I adore Dixie Square mall.
The way the walls hang open like jagged wounds, the debris that litters everything like carelessly scattered playthings. I love abandoned places and Dixie Square is one of the best.
I'm such a freak I know but abandoned places, cities (like Chernobyl), buildings, what have you, I think they are just gorgeous.
Still trying to figure out a way into Sandia Ranch Sanitarium without being shot.
