NEW ORLEANS METAL: Dixie Whiskey by Eyehategod - Provocative name notwithstanding, this band was one of the best of the Nola sludge core acts along with Crowbar.  During the 90's they had a string of albums that ranged from more chaotic, garage style hardcore punk to more solidly produced affairs, but all the while keeping that booming, doom infused, molasses metal.  After 2000 though, they pretty much went their separate ways until recently when they have finally put together an album that should be released shortly (here is one track that has been released).

Until the full album is out though, there is plenty to choose from in the back catalog.  Many would point to Take As Needed for Pain as their best and most representative work.  However, I like the punk attitude of Dopesick, which was about the most wild and unruly of recording sessions there could have been.  But what was produced was raw and aggressive and pure.  The catchiest of the tunes is Dixie Whiskey, a Sabbath-esque track that just grabs you by its riff and drags you through the mud.  Definitely looking forward to that new album after listening to the old stuff.
