Cutie Reviews: DIY Cupcake Deco
I’ve been waiting to play with this- and with Tokyo Treat being the next box, I was more than encouraged to get to this!
Does this set look familiar at all~?
I ask that because I believe this is an updated/upgraded version of a previous DIY we got like two years ago I think. I reviewed that a long time ago and I’ve improved a lot since then; as has this kit. So let’s see how things go!
In each set is the following:
x1 Deco Cream (2 sets have strawberry, 1 had chocolate)
x1 wheel of 8-different deco bits/sprinkles/slices
x2 plastic glasses
x3 cupcake liners/molds.
x1 serving tray and serving utensil
x1 air-dry clay (which differs for each set)
x1 cream tip
The main difference (off of the top of my head) between this set and the last one is that we had two beverage bottles and a handful of serving items. I’d say this time around, the “accessories“ we did get are of better quality. The prior one didn’t include the cream or the serving items.
Everything is included, but they do suggest you use tweezers to help decorate. So I grabbed these:
With so many ideas, I really didn’t know where to begin! The box helps give some inspiration (as does the Kawaii Box blog), but I decided to pick something easy: a cupcake!
So it’s recommended that you take a small glob of clay to fill in the “cupcake mold“. You can leave it in there or remove it if you like, they suggest just leaving it in there.
Then with the cream, you twist on the nozzle/tip and begin the decorating process.
It’s a relatively quick-drying glue (as I found out after getting it on my hands), but you’re given enough of a window to decorate it at your own pace.
However, I did notice before I began that the cream tube looks full- but I’m not sure it is...
Next I saw how they did the glasses (putting in sprinkles, then a dab of cream on top)... this is how I found out what the cream is. As you can see it’s a little messy. That’s because when I went to add it, it stuck to the deco pieces!
I did what I could to save it, then moved on. By this point I was kinda “done“ messing with it and decided to just make a cake with what was left of the clay.
Not as pretty as I would have liked, and I admit that if I had more clay (and cream) I could have probably done something a little nicer... maybe. I like crafts but I’m not very good at them.
This is everything sat together. I had some cream left, so after pulling off some of the cake and shoving it in one of the molds, I filled the other with what was left of my cream. In theory, had I not wasted a small amount on the cake and mess with the glass, I’d have had enough for everything. But it’s not that bad, I only had one empty glass left.
~CUTIE RANKING~
Skill Level: ♥ ♥ ♥ I don’t think it’s all-that hard or anything, but there was tiny little bumps along the way. The cupcake was definitely the easiest and less-stressful thing to make.
Directions: ♥ ♥ ♥ They’re incredibly limited. All they do is show you how to use the cream, but maybe that’s all that’s necessary anyway? I kind of wish they had included a little more, like ideas, or tips.
Packaging: ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ It's colorful and simple, but I like it. I also like how you can use the back flap for decoration/background.
Quality: ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ Compared to the last version of this, I like this one a lot better. I was especially happy my clay wasn’t half-dried and useless unlike last time.
Content: ♥ ♥ ♥ It’s a lot better than last time, we have more usable parts. But I wish they had like... maybe 2 colors of clay? Or some more decorative items or something?
I’d give it... maybe a 8 out of 10? I really enjoyed myself when I started, and I still think what I made came out kind of cute- but I still feel like it can have a few tiny improvements.
