hey! are you tired of mixing acrylic paint with random shit to paint your patches? interested in a paint thats a little bit too opaque and probably needs to be watered down? (thus giving you a bit more to work with!)
then heres an idea!:
wall paint samples.
ive been using $5 wall paint sample tubs since i started making patches, and holy SHIT it works super well! since the paint is so opaque you dont tend to need very much, and because its meant for walls its overly strong and water resistant. the small tubs also give you plenty considering how little you tend to need!
"annoying anarcho! what about the fumes!" idk but it works great. wear a mask or something while you paint if you're really worried.
only con is that you need to be confident in your abilities! if you mispaint you need to either go over it in a different colour or wipe it away with water asap, otherwise shits great! if you want colours that arent different varieties of white then mix it with acrylic, hypocritical of me to suggest i know, but it works a charm.
or, if you dont like paint then household bleach can be pretty decent! its permanent, has a cool looking colour +effect and is generally in most households, just make sure your fabric works with it and do some test strips!
hi!! new to punk and i’ve got a couple questions 🧡
1- do you have any tips on finding more obscure/local bands? i’m unsure if there’s a punk scene near me and i’m a minor so my options are fairly limited. 2- is there a reason people sew on blank patches before painting on them or is it just for aesthetic reasons? and 3- any diy advice?
1) id say find a local record shop or bar with a parent if you have a cool parent and ask about local shows or bands! often locally owned shops will host concerts for local bands!!! i’ve met some awesome people at local shows!
2) making a layer of blank patches under other patches can help the strength of the clothing but i only sew blank patches on sometimes, i often paint them in bulk and then sew them on after. i don’t think there’s a correct way, just do what works for you!!
3) use up cycled things! ask your parents/friends/family for old clothes or sewing supplies! buttons are a fun addition to any project, and old tshirt fabric and designs can be sick additions and really useful in most diy projects! (also always have white and black acrylic paint on hand)
im not able to diy much because it takes a lot of energy, but something i found through experience is that tablecloths are really versatile. i like to buy them from thrift shops and pop ups around halloween. they're big enough to make long skirts and shawls, and if you get the right fabrics, they can be used easily for patches. same with thin blankets or thick bedsheets, you really just have to get creative. and its much cheaper than buying fabric from a craft store.
I made a 30s video (kinda tutorial) of how the heart shaped trinket tray turned out!
I used air dry clay. I'd recommend punching all the air out and using A LITTLE BIT of baby oil/any oil for your hands and surface, to make it easier to handle.
Also, I painted it with acrylics and then added a cost of white glue for protection (it becomes transparent no worries)
Please, reblog to support and keep the inspiration rolling! 🩷🌸
Hey if you want to get into diy, mainly sewing, or just want some tips you should totally read this awesome post 👽
sooo I see a lot of people on the internet who don’t really know where to start when it comes to stuff like this and im bored and want to yap so im making this post instead of doing my math homework!
DISCLAIMER: I am not saying that you absolutely have to follow these word for word, and I am not a master at diying/sewing/whatever else and there’s probably more efficient ways out there, so if there’s anything here that’s wrong or i should change, please lmk!
materials:
needle(s)+thread - for sewing (by hand!) usually these are dirt cheap at any craft store or the dollar store, or you can ask your friends/family for any they can give you. if you’re gonna buy some, any polyester thread will do. for needles, i recommend sharps because they’re great if your just starting out and for general use as well.
fabric - i started out on whatever fabric i had, google recommends cotton but if you don’t have that, it’s fine. to obtain said fabric, you can sacrifice some old clothes or ask around for unwanted clothes from people you know. thrift stores are also great, you can pick out a random shirt and cut it up
measuring tape - for measuring of course, great if you’re making clothes or tailoring them
seam ripper - change my life forever! way way easier than using scissors, saves a lot of time
fabric scissors - to cut fabric
fabric pencil - to mark your fabric for where you wanna cut/sew/anything else
box cutter - cutting boxes/cardboard, i also use these for paper to make stencils for patches. this is great for a lot of projects but scissors work just fine too!
YOU DONT ABSOLUTELY HAVE TO HAVE ALL OF THESE (except a needle and thread, otherwise you wouldn’t be able to sew) you can use whatever you have, these are just items that might make your life a little easier.
you don’t have to break bank on all the fancy stuff, whatever you can obtain works
how do i learn?:
the internet is your best friend, youtube tutorials help a bunch when you’re learning, as well as for learning how to do certain projects
maybe someone in your life likes to diy, you could ask them to teach you a couple things! my mom taught me how to sew, embroider, and crochet, learning from other people really helps!
and of course, practice! you don’t have to practice for hours everyday, just whenever you have time or whenever you feel motivated is fine! obviously you’re not going to be perfect immediately, I struggled a lot when I started but eventually you will get the hang of it. patience is key, don’t give up!
some basic stuff to learn: back stitch, running stitch, ladder stitch, blanket stitch
these are all some very common stitches that you will probably use at least once, they’re also pretty easy so i recommend starting with these
and that’s all I have as of right now! like I said, if there’s anything at all I should change/add/remove, let me know! i hope some people find this helpful, and have fun!
