it's definitely sorta-kinda fantasy not-texas™? like. it's based on a lot of places IN Texas that I've been and lived in and loved, but it is very determinedly not one real place. I've taken the rivers in central texas, my highschool as it was circa 2014 in the heart of the houston gayborhood (may she rest in pieces). there are aspects of the Gulf of Mexico (Galveston and Surfside beaches combined lol) as well as some of the art scenes in both houston and san antonio. it's sort of a hidden love letter to the good parts of my childhood, even though the theme is dark lol.

the school itself is nicknamed "cortado", Spanish for cut/chopped up, because its construction split the town distinctly between the rich and the poor, and immediately following that was the construction of a highway and several new neighborhoods.

it's old and new everywhere, which feels very me. it's also very quietly leftist lol <3 and super queer of course. it's also oddly personal, considering I'm writing it with someone else!
