Hello everyone, I was pretty pleased with the vast majority of what I saw from the Chargers last night. I’ll give a few of my impressions and cover some of the injuries.
-I was quite happy to see that the starting OL turned out to be Dunlap/Franklin/Watt/Fluker/Barksdale. They looked alright, an important first step for the group that was a major team weakness last year. DJ Fluker looked slightly uneasy at RG, but that’s to be expected. Loved the Franklin/Watt blocks to free up Danny Woodhead for a TD.
-RB Melvin Gordon looks like a physical back, but he even admitted he missed some runs. He looked like he was rushing things, maybe too eager to adjust to the speed of the game. Pretty normal rookie stuff. He’ll get better and soon.
-The Offense is going to be diverse. WR Keenan Allen has been having a good camp, and it showed in this game. Combine him with Stevie Johnson, Malcom Floyd, Gates, Green, Woodhead, and Gordon, and the Chargers have a bunch of unique pieces that are going to causes Defenses issues going forward. Allen may have found a great home in the slot.
-Importantly, OLB Jerry Attaochu looked strong against the run. He showed a lot of explosiveness when he was healthy last year, but struggled against the run. With Jarrett Johnson enjoying retirement, Attaochu will likely see a lot of early snaps and if he maintains his strong play against the run the Chargers will be in business.
-MLB Donald Butler looked fast. He was in a funk all season last year, and I believe part of it was he was overthinking his play. That was not the case in this game. He also did well against the run. He has reportedly had a great camp.
-OLB Cordarro Law is playing like he wants a roster spot. In addition to multiple QB hurries and a sack, Law was strong against the run as well.
-CB Patrick Robinson made plays. He’s in a battle for the Nickel CB spot, and he probably helped himself last night.
The Rookies: MLB Denzel Perryman picked up a big penalty and he’s going to have to learn Quarterbacks are protected real estate in the NFL. Other than that, he looked solid. CB Craig Mager played the most snaps out of anyone last night, as the Chargers try to get him the experience he really needs. He flashed his strong play against the run, and he wasn’t terrible in coverage. OLB Kyle Emmanuel sure didn’t look like a small school prospect. He looked like he was explosive enough to play in the NFL. He got himself a sack and a forced fumble on Special Teams. DT Darius Philon struggled against the run and looked okay against the pass, which is consistent about what we heard about him coming out of college. However he showed he wouldn’t be a total liability if the Chargers need to rely on him in passing situations.
The Injuries: I liked what I saw from CB Chris Davis before he left the game with a concussion. He’ll have to pass protocol to continue practicing or playing. OLB Tourek Williams looked quite impressive before breaking his foot. RG Johnnie Troutman looked like a solid run blocker in his limited snaps before he left the game with a broken arm. HC Mike McCoy said there are no IR plans for either as of right now. RB Donald Brown did not play with a hip injury. Also, me, unfortunately. This morning I got a pretty significant cut on my middle finger on my left hand. Thankfully most of this was written already, but it may limit my activity here for about a week or so.
DJ Fluker told Michael Gehlken that he’s been working on reducing his weight this offseason, and mentioned that he played a little Guard last week. Both pieces of information are interesting. Fluker playing a little Guard isn’t proof that that will be his destination for the beginning of the season, but I wouldn’t be surprised if he did end up as the Chargers starting RG.
Donald Bulter had several surgeries over the offseason and says he’s healthy now. He said his health was no excuse for his play, but let’s all hope that he’s really healthy and that his game improves from a disastrous 2014.
Rookie ILB Denzel Perryman has not been a full participant in OTAs, however he was seen showing off some impressive moves in a charity dodgeball tournament over the weekend. The Chargers were not amused. That’s a rookie making a rookie mistake. As long as he becomes a full participant soon, it’s quite likely that Perryman sees a real role in the Chargers Defense this year.
Finally, the Chargers seem to be working on a contract extension for Corey Liuget, the team’s best Defensive Lineman. That link also mentions that the Chargers are working on extensions for both Philip Rivers and Eric Weddle, but I’ll discuss that in a post coming a little later.
