What is going to be special or different about this night? The Vinyl vs Digital event features a combination of both nu-skool and old school talent playing music using turntables, cdj's and dj midi controllers. It will feature different musical genres from different eras. It's the best of both worlds.
How did the concept come about? Actually, it was Chris Sheppard who first said we should do a party. He has been purchasing quite a bit of vinyl at Play De Record and wanted to play it. Most clubs are equipped with cd decks but not all dj's can play on turntables so a party combining both elements just made sense.
What can we expect music wise? House, tech and rave music. A journey thru past, present and even a little taste of the future. Each artist on the bill will add something special to the night.
How did you guys come to collaborate? We have known one another for many years, each of us having done various parties thru the years. We had not seen one another for almost 10 years until we met up at a charity event hosted by The MPE Project (NTR7) We got to talking and a few weeks later the Vinyl vs Digital concept started to come together.
Coming from the “older” (but wiser) generation of dance music DJ’s how do you stay relevant and what motivates you to continue to play, promote etc. and keep your passion for music going? Every dj has their own views and reasons for doing what they do. The passion for music plays a big part in why we play. Sharing our knowledge with the youth is important as well. If we don't teach them their roots, how are they supposed to support the scene? How are they supposed to continue what we have been doing for all these years? Corporate wins then right?
How has the dance music scene, particularly in Toronto evolved over the last decade or so and how have you evolved as a participant? The corporate world has really pushed to commercialize dance music and in addition the underground scene has become very fractious. There has been a recent trend trying to unify the scene more but it isn't organic.
What do you think of the current club scene; demographics, music, how the bar owners support DJ’s and promoters? No comment... ;)
Is it more challenging with the ever-changing pace of technology or is it easier to be in this industry? Although the 1200 turntable was an industry standard for over 3 decades, dee-jays have adapted to the digital realm quite easily. The challenge might be more to do with what technology you use and how you use it. Debates constantly flare up about what a "real" dj is and usually these debates have more to do with what gear the dj is using or if it's synced etc and have less to do with if that dj knows how to program a proper set. Anyone who has just started to dj recently should in all honesty "learn the ropes". Learn how to beat match, learn about transitions, phrasing... all that. Get some experience under your belt. For those who understand these concepts... if they want to hook up multiple decks or even controller gear like remix deck etc and sync everything...why not. Chances are they will be creating something new as opposed to just mixing song after song.
Who are you listening to right now? DaBoom: Doc Link, Tracy Brathwaite, Stefano Kosa, Ramiro Lopez Gio: Falling Cows
How did you choose Lily as your venue? We wanted a smaller more intimate venue that had 2 floors. Li'ly fit the description and the management was willing to work with us in order to properly present the artists to a smaller but more diverse crowd.
Future plans? Currently we have a series of smaller, intimate events planned over the next few months. July 11th is when something really special is going to happen. Can't really give you to many details but a larger scale event is in the works which is set to kick off a renaissance in the our scene. Keep an eye out.
